Previously we announced a Call-In Lobbying Day for Thursday, September 8. We’re asking each of you—members, grassroots activists, readers, and friends—to set some time aside on September 8 to phone your senators and representatives and voice your opposition to the NDI (dietary supplement) guidance. Tell them why you’re upset over the NDI guidance, and ask them to direct the FDA to carefully review their draft guidance and hold hearings at the end of the review process unless the FDA amends the guidance to reflect DSHEA (and Congress’s) stated values and goals. The FDA is clearly overreaching its authority, and the logic of its arguments in the guidance is questionable at best. Congress has FDA oversight and needs to review the agency’s actions in creating this new guidance.

We recently submitted our comments to the FDA in response to the first of two requests from the FDA for information, outlining the immense burden created by the dietary supplement draft guidance. Other concerned parties submitted comments in this first round as well. FDA responded with some pretty ludicrous logic.
The agency claims it will take only 20 hours per NDI notification. This is an absurd claim, considering the extensive paperwork and safety studies they require in the new draft guidance. Furthermore, as we have mentioned many times before, FDA refuses to file (that is, approve) most of the NDI notifications that are submitted, claiming that the notifications are “incomplete” or “inadequate.” So even though FDA rejects the majority of applications because they are incomplete, they really expect a supplement company to take only 20 hours per notification?
In addition, the FDA expects only 55 new NDI notifications per year. This is after officials stated in the guidance that there are 55,600 dietary supplements on the market. Something is very wrong with their math! Experts predict as many as 125,000 notifications.
Moreover, the FDA has not accounted for any of the costs to hire the expert consultants, scientists, etc., who will be required to successfully draft the NDI notifications. And they seriously think this won’t add any significant burden to industry?
Of course the ultimate issue here isn’t the cost or burden on supplement producers. The NDI guidance is really the first step toward an FDA approval process that will change the law governing supplements—and in the long run both sharply reduce the number of supplements sold and sharply increase the cost of those surviving.
We need Congress’s involvement, oversight, and correction. Join your fellow Americans in phoning your legislators on September 8 and asking them to stand against the FDA’s new supplement guidance!

I do not agree with the new FDA regulation: NDI. It is redundant, un-necessary and will function to destroy another segment of our already faltering economy. It will also make whole food supplements more expensive.
Someone needs to reign in the FDA!! The FDA is NOT protecting the public. The FDA has approved so many dangerous drugs that 106,000 people die annually from side effects of FDA approved drugs that have been prescribed correctly and taken as prescribed. This is how the FDA protects the public?
It looks like the FDA is more of a patsy for the pharmaceutical industry rather than a public protection agency. If 106,000 annual deaths are acceptable side effects at the FDA, then why is the FDA going after co-op Rawsome? Why did the FDA go after ear wax candles? Why did the FDA go after cherry and walnut producers for advertising that cherries and walnuts are healthy?
The FDA is totally corrupt and Washington needs to do the job they have been elected to do and protect the public from the FDA and un-necessary regulations of our supplements.

I agree with the words of the concerned American citizens above. My perception is that the FDA has been paid off by the Big Pharma group & the politicians that we, the citizens have elected. I have great concern over the immunization requirements for future generations, the GMO foods being served to us and our health industry that we are forced to endure. Supplements are one of the only ways we are able to keep ourselves healthy. With luck we are able to find a few moral & trustworthy practitioners who will support us in health rather than illness. Please continue the good fight against the money hungry few in our great country. We have some of the worst health care in the world because of this.

The FDA is clearly over-stepping it’s bounds! There needs to be a new Department created JUST for natural supplements & food items! To expect an agency to regulate natural substances as well as DRUGS when the two are in direct competition for consumer’s retail dollars is absolute insanity! Health choices (life) , and freedom thereof (liberty) are basic to Democracy. Our Congress takes an oath to uphold, protect and defend the US Constitution, not the Corporations. Our supplements give us the food we need if we do not get the nutrition for our body then our health will faille. Know for a fact that my nutrition is the reason I am alive today. After having spinal meningitis an having to have brain surgery after that to correct the tear where spinal fluid was leaking through. It is a merycal the doctor I had believed in giving supplements for my body could not get the nutritions it needed this was back in 1968 So if it had been now I would not have came through because of the way the government is out of control wanting to take the best part of nutrition for our body that works better than chemical medication.

The FDA passed a law that says “only a drug can diagnose, treat or cure a disease”. Any health agency that is this arrogant and think the public is that stupid does not have any business dealing with nutrients because they have already stated their opinion on that. All they want to do is elliminate the competition for their bedbuddies, Big Pharma.

We want an agency created specifically composed of nutritional biochemical professionals and practicing nutritionists who research nutritional products for the benefit of health based on current scientific information and provide that information to the general public with industry leaders who are GMP compliant providing manufacturing standards for those products.
It is that simple and clear. There is no other choice.

Why would anyone in congress care about vitamin or nutrient supplementation. Just sit back and listen to the disclaimers and side effects of drugs being touted on T.V. It’s terrifying. I take nutritional supplements every and have all my life without any side effects.
The FDA HAS BECOME WHAT THE CONGRESS HAS BECOME. Cronyism at its ugliest. Supplements should be treated as foods and if there isa problem the supplement company should be sued. The only role of teh FDA or FTC is fining supplement companies fro not putting in the supplements what is stated on the package and not including an items that have been PROVEN harmful. Let people decide for themselves what to eat.
The FDA was originally created to protect the public from toxic and dangerous substances, such as the ones marketed and sold by their owner, Big Pharma. Want to know why the FDA is mounting this onerous and illegal offensive against nutritional supplements… just follow the money trail and connect the dots. It is all well and good that we complain and winge about the goings-on in Washington, but until there is a real public outcry, complete with marches in the streest of DC and across the US, like in the 1960’s, it will just be more of the same. The NDI is the first step toward decimating the entire supplement industry. It is quite clear that this is what the FDA really wants and has wanted for years. It is not about safety. It is not about anything else other than decimating the entire supplement industry and totally gutting DSHEA. The FDA knows that the NDI guidance is ludicrous, but they want it that way. I am counting on industry to fight back. We, the people will fight too, but the industry also has to fight back.
I have found that it is easier to contact the Senator or Representative at their local office than trying to contact them in Washington. There is generally less interference/screening to get your message heard.

Thank you for myour continued efforts regarding this and every other threat to our
freedoms granted by God and a part of our American history. Tyrants everywhere
will always try to enslave the people. Although we should never stop trying to
influence our Congressmen and women it is my conclusion that for the most part
they are paid stooges who are unwilling to hear the people who elected them and also
unwilling to understand and apply our US Constitution to any of their actions.
For this reason I believe that instead of begging them and saying PRETTY PLEASE, LISTEN
TO OUR CRIES, we must now turn the great majority of our efforts in influencing our
legislatures to nullify any measure enacted by our unresponsive Congress or by any
illegal alphbet federal agency such as the FDA.
We are witnessing the great beginning of state action in this area and even the enactment
of sound money legislation establishing money systems which compete with the illegal and immoral Federal Reserve System.
This country was founded because of the discontent of our Colonists who had the guts and

I am one american who is totally against the FDA and the FDA’s NDI (supplement) guidance. The FDA seems to do everything with a motive and my thoughts are to disband the FDA. We as American citizens will come up with a better than a bought out Administration which it is now.
Everybody seems to know the GOVT is a bunch of bought out self in terested liars. So when do we band together and start all over again like they are doing in Egypt, Libya, and Syria? Is it possible that you are approaching this situation from the wrong angle? it appears to me that you are thinking that the FDA is wanting to run the Supplement Business like a legitimate business. The FDA does not know how to run a legal business. Or a lawful one, for that matter. The FDA is an under manned, under funded agency that is a cross roads. The appoval of a drug, even for a short period of time, allows a huge amount of money to change hands.
There in lies the problem, a lot of money changes hands. A drug that costs pennies to make can build a fortune for many people in a realitively short period of time. The approval of a cheap chemical combination can be a cure or a killer. The profits in the pharmaceutical business are an unimaginable amount of money. Nothing in our society is as dangerous as drugs, legal or illegal. Some are made very wealthy, some very sick, some are made healthy and some people die.
Any business can be illegal and a legal/legitimate can be made to be illegal. Laws that legitimize illegal products are protected by the law, but that doesn’t make them honest legal or moral. When the government allows laws that legitimize unhealthy or unsafe products, for certain people or company’s to make money, it is still unlawful, it is just that the government is allowing fraud in the name of law. The laws can be changed, but it does not take very long for huge sums of money to be amassed. There are many drugs on the market today that are not safe, they have been approved for use by the FDA and they keep people sick and some even die, but they are still being used and abused and big money is still being made, The FDA is not an honest knowlegable agency. Too many unsafe and very marginal drugs “SNEAK” through the system. The system is not one of science, it is one of finance.
When the fox runs the hen house, there is a serious conflict of interests. If we were to follow a drug purchase, in reverse, it may prove my point. I buy a bottle of “medicine” at a drug store. It was prescriibed by my doctor, that is licensed to practice medicine in my state. He received the license because he was schooled at an approved university. Many of the lecturers were employees of the drug company. The laboratoies and the lab equipment and the materials that the student used in the school labs were donnated by the drug company. The books were drug company book and seminars were given by the drug company. Annual seminars and conventions are sponsered by the drug companies. The courtesy rooms, hospitality rooms, hand outs and samples are compliments of the drug company. Volume sales out of a given outlet/office are rewarded with tickets, golf fees and trips to far away places. When specifying a drug, the doctor does not usually have to look very far to find the drug of choice for a given set of symptoms. Periodically,the salesperson will call on the doctor and show the “NEW DRUG” to replace the old drug. The new drug does not have to be better or more efficient to replace the old one, it only needs to prove that it does not cause anymore problems. When the symptoms that the drug has been said to treat show up. there is no hesitation, the script book comes out and the new, more expensive drug is scripted. The doctor doesn’t have to study or even check out the quality of the new drug, the salesperson has educated the doctor about the new information on the drug and the doctor is now up to date.
There is a tremendous loyalty in this business. The salesperson can leave the drug house and the doctor’s medicine cabinet will have the new drug house literature and drugs in place on the next visit of that salesperson.
There are some drugs that the doctor has been schooled to find a way to justify their use, even though there are other drugs far better for the specific illness. Many illnesses can be better served by not taking any drugs. Today’s doctor has been schooled in writing a script for every symptom. Sometimes the best medicine is no medicine Today’s doctor feels an obligatiion to the drug company.
Medicine today is not oriented toward doctoring, as in the curing an illness. The advent of the inorganic chemical formulation that can alter a symptoms of an illness or disease has been very lucritive, from two angles. The fact that the disease never goes away provides extended income to the system. Extended illnesses have a tendency to draw other illnesses into the picture, further increases to the income of the medical industry.
Supplements are used too solve problems, without side effects. Most supplements are natural and the body is fed by them, as they assist the diet. The choices of diet are better today then ever and yet, there is a need to compliment that need. The insidence of illness and deaths reported in the USA every year are over 100,000 deaths from FDA approved drugs and there is a huge compliment of injury/illnesses that are not published. Injuries that render the patient perminently disabled are not published in prominant publications. On the contrary, there are realitively few reports of injury/illness/deaths in the USA, from supplements. The fear of putting an industry of helpful healthy natural supplements in the hands of an agency that is unqualified to police the suitability and safety for human consumption make the decision to put the FDA in control is backwards. The safety of the supplement industry, that is (for the most part) market driven, should be put in charge of the training of the FDA and similar such agencies and keep appointments of incompetant unualified people out of influential places. It is nice to be able to place friends and family and business associates in positions of importance, but if they are incapable of making the decision between a safe product and an unsafe one, they are no longer just wrong, they are criminal and protected by the government so that the same or worse decisions can be made, over and over again. Common sense goes out the window when government gets involved. Capitalism works when it is allowed to fuction without the government altering or covering up for its mistakes…

Please keep our good supplements available at low and reasonable prices. So many people are finding so many of the drugs the medical profession is pushing to be detrimental to our health. Please assist the medical doctors to become more aware of the natural products and their benefit. Yvonne

If anyone listens to the side affects of those drugs on TV they should know better than to take them and find an alternative. There about 400 alternates for cancer alone. The FDA has tried to ban most of them.
It is obvious now that the FDA has no interest in our health, but is firmly in the thrall of Big Pharma and willingly and actively doing their bidding. The FDA’s actions and behavior speak far louder than their words. It has become quite obvious now that their agenda is not to protect our health, but to crush all competition to the pharmaceutical industry. The FDA is totally corrupt and has been for a long time–remember how they got Aspartame approved way back in the 1900s? This neurotoxin is responsible for more complaints to the FDA than any other food product and has a list as long as my arm–literally–of over 90 known toxic side effects, ranging from headaches to seizures to blindness to death. And what has the FDA done about it? Absolutely nothing. Instead of banning this horrid chemical which has caused harm to many, they go around staging armed raids on cherry growers, dietary supplement suppliers, raw food stores, dairies and the like who have harmed no one.
I have a friend who has been drinking diet soda sweetened with Aspartame for years. This man was normal, healthy and gainfully employed a few years ago, but has progressed from healthy to absence seizures (blank outs) to grand mal seizures, can’t drive and can’t work. My wife and son both have seizure disorders, and even a taste of anything containing Aspartame will cause either of them to go into repeated seizures. If that’s what they call safe, I’m a flea on a monkey’s back.
It’s long past time something was done about this. I have written my senators and representative concerning both the raid on Rawsome foods and the more recent senseless raid on Gibson Guitars, letting them know the FDA and other government agencies are corrupt and totally out of control. I also let them know if they are aware of what is going on and not doing anything about it, they are part of the problem and will not get my vote come November.
Yes, let’s do all take part in this upcoming call-in campaign and let our law makers know we are well aware of what is going on (in spite of the major media’s refusal to cover these raids) and we’re not going to take it sitting down. I suspect the one thing these politicos fear more than anything else is the prospect of not getting re-elected. Let’s let them know where we stand.
I think we all agree on this is issue. The question is what can we do about it? Why do we have to keep fighting the same battles over and over again? One of the main causes is the people who are hired to head agencies like the FDA, USDA, Defense Dept. etc. Usually, they are people who have worked for the very industries they are suppossed to regulate. The people at the lower levels in the agencies often really want to be of service but are threatened by their bosses to come up with studies which serve the interests of the corporations instead of the people. We need a law that forbids the hiring of people from these industries and stops the revolving door between them and the agencies they regulate. Nor should any funding be allowed which can compromise results of studies. In these tough budget times Congress needs to send a list of priorities to these agencies. That which causes the most harm needs the most regulation – drugs 100s of thousands of deaths not supplements which rarely if ever cause harm. These agencies can not even keep up with the 1000s of new chemicals in our environment, these need to be studied and regulated before they worry about natural substances which have been used for years with no harm done.
My wife and I have been taking selected vitamins and supplements for over 60 years. Five years ago on a visit to our doctor, I told the doctor this fact. She immediately ordered my wife to stop taking vitamins and supplements as these are what was causing her medical problems. My wife complied with this doctors demand only to have her health rapidly decline and she died nine days later. I continued taking my vitamins and supplements and am now a very healthy 85 years old. Needless to say I fired that doctor.
Believe me folks, this has nothing to do with our protection, but only their own…and what do they want to protect? MONEY!!! While they’re trying to take away our God given right to eat organic foods and take supplements, etc, they are putting out meds and shots they hardly test and individuals are sueing then left and right. Now, don’t get me wrong, there are some meds that work and are not hurting people and believe me there are some fine doctors out there. I am angry with the ones that don’t care about ANYONE but their greedy selves. That women, Kathreen or what ever her name is,the head of it all, needs to be fired on the spot and any co-hearts that are working with her. I saw her on a TV interview talking about alternative products and the proof that was there for her to see and read [ scientific proof ] it. She had a look on her face that angered me so much, and she said no she wouldn’t read it. Was she not appointed by Obama? Go figure. We have got to continue praying that God stops these kind of people and gets them out of there. We need to continue signing petitions, making phone calls and what ever we can do to get congress or anyone else to listen to us…we the people.
The FDA as a spokesperson for big pHARMa is at it again. This is an ongoing battle, and the only way to keep our supplements is to keep on top of the FDA. It has a bad track record of rubber-stamping the pharmaceutical companies’ drugs, and being a catspaw for those same companies’ attempts to shut down nutritional products. (I remember when there was an attempt to limit the supplementation of Vitamin A so severe that carrots would have had to be by prescription only!)
This power grab by the FDA to effectively ban dietary supplements by imposing impossible regulatory costs is morally obscene. People’s lives will be shortened and their suffering enhanced because the FDA is curtailing their freedom to take care of themselves with inexpensive remedies that actually work.
We’re told that the FDA is the Great Authority–in possession of Super Knowlege concerning medical science beyond the ken of mere human mortals. But this is totalitarian nonsense, because science, like all other kinds of intellectual endeavor, is necessarily developed through the efforts of individuals. Thinking is by definition an individual effort, because it is the outcome of volitional choice. How well one thinks has everything to do with the effort, persistance and integrity one brings to the task. Thus the notion of Great Authority, decreed and enforced at the point of a gun, is profoundly anti-intellectual and irrational. The notion that politicians who masquerade as scientists ought to control our lives is vicious.
The FDA’s proposed new regulations are not designed to protect Americans from harmless and therapeutic vitamins. This is aimed at advancing the power of FDA bureaucrats and their commerical allies over our lives.
I was brain washed in nursing school just like the docs. I believed in the FDA and big Pharma. Not any more. After going thru radiation, chemo and surgery for breast cancer i am now a staunch supporter of supplements, and holistic medicine. There have been great advances in medicine and drugs but most of the drugs only mask the symptoms and do not cure. Alternative medicine has been around longer than the big drug companies. Most of the drugs they manufacture are from plants that have been around for centuries. These plants cure without the dangerous side effects of the current drugs. Big Pharma is greedy and only want to make more money. How much is enough????? they have lowered the blood pressure so more folks can take drugs and even more than one for the same condition. They have lowered the cholesterol, and now they want to put little kids on blood pressure meds before they have hypertension so they won’t get it. They even give little newborns drugs for GERD. they don’t get my money any more unless absolutely necessary. They have even lowered the blood sugar level so more folks can take pre-diabetic drugs. Get the message?????
I do not agree with the FDA and it’s so-called “protecting the public” by regulating what drugs and supplementals can be sold to the public. I think their attack on Kellogg’s cheerios claim that it reduces heart attack or stroke is so outlandish! Watch out Wheaties, the FDA is gonna get you next because your logo is “Breakfast of Champions”. I say get rid of the FDA and then we will see how they like being under the microscope. Touche !
For all the people who are threatened by the potential loss of supplements – Please, please, please phone or write, twice or three times!! Make each writing different, say your own words, use some of the script recommended to sound like you know what you are talking about, in case the senator actually does not even know what the bill says. Good chance he has not even read it, and thinks there is need for “protecting” the public from dangerous supplements. Goodness, this is tiring having to fight for our freedoms from the government all the time.

The FDA has it’s slim good points and many bad points. Some of the products they approve and allow to be advertised on TV are ridicoulous. After listening to some of the side effects these products can have including death I wouldn’t give them to my dog. I am a firm believer of natural products and have been taking them for over 20 years now, they include ones for heart health weight managment, lung support ( I am a smoker ) arthritis and stress, just to name a few.
Not to change the subject and make this a political issue but since obama has been in office Our Country has become a stronger dictatorship, the head of the FDA was given the job by obama now what does that tell you. We as “The People” have to stand tall to protect “Our Rights”

What Alliance for Natural Health should do is this:
1. Create a petition against FDA and NDI and send it to every health food store in the country. Have an online version for people to read and sign. Also let us members print out a copy and take it to every health food store in our city/town for customer signatures by a certain deadline date.
2. Ask the health food store owners or managers to POST IT where their customers can read and sign it.
3. Then take all those signed petitions (make copies first) and send:
a) One copy to each state rep and senator and
b) Another copy to FDA and NDI and
c) Another copy to National Institute of Health.
The fact is that our reps and senators (all Dems here in NM) could care less about what we think when we call them. But if they see thousands of signatures they just might.
Also, petitions with thousands and millions of signatures are powerful and the last bastion of democracy. It is a committment to a statement that a person is willing to sign to.
This needs to be done, because sadly most health food store managers/owners (at least here in NM) have never even heard of Alliance for Natural Health.

This is pisses me off, when we send these people to Washington to help us. All they do is help themselves through pharmaceutical companies to pass their agenda and leave us searching for dry land. Do we think they are being pressured by big Pharma to do this? I do. Think may years ago when L-Tryptophan was so inexpensive. Went to the Health food Store and bought it off the shelf. Did the same as Prozak. Took care of depression w/o all the side effects, Was natural and safe. I still believe the makers of Prozak had something to do with the tainted supply that came from China.
Vitamin D-3, another good vitamin, also good for depression, especially around the Winter months. Think the drug company’s that sell anti-depression drugs are pressuring the FDA to stop this healthy substitute because it is taking away from their sales?
OK, so I don’t know what the FDA is trying to do, but vit D-3, is an example of what could happen.
Granted, the FDA cannot monitor the sale and use of vitamins, herbs and minerals, Yes there are some out there that do cause problems but; If I am going to self medicate with herbs and vitamins then let me.

Yes please let us call our legislators and:
A) Remind them that they are elected to do our will. Don’t ask them what their position is.
B) Watch how they vote, compared to how the mouth talks.
C) Expose their vote in letters to the editor and in online blogs. This will help to keep good people in office and reward them, and to get bad apples ousted.
D) Remind fellow Americans to read the voting records of every single elected official, high and low-ranking, before voting. Repeat: Read their voting records, don’t just trust how the mouth talks.
Then, and only then, will we have a different America.
Yes it’s true that votes are massively stolen. But they can only steal so much. They have to stay close to the polls or risk being eyeballed rather carefully.

Sharp contrasts between straw polls and mainstream, even the supposedly less-biased Zogby misrepresented the facts about Kucinich’s campaign, which was consistently far ahead of Obama and Hilary alike in straw polls, yet said to be at the bottom 2% by the mainstream (including Zogby).

I am very concerned about the new FDA draft guidance on dietary supplements and new dietary ingredients.

• When the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act was passed, Congress intended there be a simple notification system for new supplements. • I am simply asking that the FDA honor Congressional intent and protect my access to the supplements I depend on to support my health.• Congress recognized that dietary supplements are natural ingredients and therefore inherently safer than drugs and chemical food additives. Anyone who doubts how corrupt the FDA is should look up Dr. Burzynski, and what they did to him. There was a documentary on him. They stole his cancer treatment patents. They tried to stop him from practicing, even though scores of people testified in court of the cures. They took him to court 5 times and tried to put him in jail while they were working to steal his work. The FDA is made up of people, some of which are more interested in lining their pockets with money than doing the job they are entrusted and paid to do. These same people should not have any hand in regulating our supplements. This would be a direct conflict of interest, since apparently they have their hands in the pockets of the pharmaceuticals.

I find much truth in the comments. We need to ask Congress to review the FDA’s absurd claims and carefully watch over the FDA’s draft NDI (supplement) guidance process. Congress has FDA oversight and needs to review the agency’s actions in creating this new guidance. FYI the DSHEA was one of the few bills that were passed with 100% positive votes. Please get it out, read it to FDA and point out they are not even covering the job Congress gave them when it was DSHEA was passed.
