Emergency Action Alert! Food Safety Passes the Senate in Shocking Maneuver

legislationSunday night, in one of the most underhanded and outrageous legislative maneuvers we’ve seen, the Senate passed the language of S. 510, the Food Safety bill, by a unanimous consent agreement. It now goes to the House of Representatives. We have one last chance to stop it!

As we told you last week, Democrats first attempted to attach the food safety bill to the short-term spending measure to keep the government running, but Republicans balked because they wanted to keep that measure clean. So last night, the Senate raised it as an amendment to a completely unrelated bill from the House of Representatives—H.R. 2751, the Consumer Assistance to Recycle and Save Act! Quite a number of reports, including some from other health organizations, have gotten many of these details wrong. The swift approval by unanimous consent caught some aides and lobbyists working on it by surprise. Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) had promised to block the legislation, but lifted his objection at the final moment.
Reid announced he would send the legislation—this time attached to a House-originated measure—back to the lower chamber for final approval. Please contact Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and your own Congressional representative immediately and urge that the Food Safety language be completely stripped from H.R. 2751 the Consumer Assistance to Recycle and Save Act!
We believe Pelosi would prefer to bring up Food Safety “under suspension,” which is an expedited House procedure that requires a two-thirds vote to pass. We need you to urge her in the strongest possible terms to bring it up under regular order—no more expedited deals, no more underhanded maneuvers!

Tell her that the Senate’s passage of this bill at 10 p.m on a Sunday night doesn’t give the public an opportunity to weigh in – and you don’t want the same thing to happend int he House! Tell her this issue is too vital for you and your family’s health and to allow it to be considered outside of regular protocols!

  1. When I click on “This Link” I get a blank page either way: if I click the secured or unsecured version. I would liike to send a message to MS Pelosi, but cannot with the link you provided.

    1. Hi Anne, the page is not really blank. IE’s security settings insert white space between header bar and content. Scroll down to find petition.

  2. I AM APPAULED THIS HEALTH CARE ISSUE HAS SURFACED AGAIN. AGAIN AN IMPORTANT PIECE OF LEGISLATION IS TAGGED ONTO A BILL WHICH IS TOTALLY UNRELATED. STOP THE UNDERHANDED MANUVEURING IN THE SENATE AND HOUSE. PLEASE STRIP THE FOOD SAFETY LANGUAGE FROM H.R. 2751. THE CONSUMER RECYCLING BILL. PLEASE!

  3. This article explains very little about what the bill is. That makes the urge to protest the bill, unreasonable. Please, be more informative.

    1. We have written so many articles about this bill over the last few months that we didn’t wish to keep repeating ourselves and force our subscribers to keep reading through old information to try to find the new updates. You can read all of our previous articles on the bill here: http://www.anh-usa.org/house-food/

      1. i agree with shulamith, there is no info about this bill. i scrolled down on your link and after several pages i found an article that says the bill bans BPA (which is a good thing, IMHO).
i was sent a link to your site by a friend and have NOT followed any of our previous posts, so for me, first and foremost, info about this bill and why it is a bad thing is paramount.
please kindly post a link to the actual page that goes through the bill and states the issues that you think will harm us. thanks much,

        1. In addition to federal regulators and big ag/food trying to regulate away food competition we’ve noted a number of specific concerns we have with the bill. We also supported the BPA ban amendment to the food safety bill but unfortunately the chemical industry had their way with political process and the amendment wasn’t offered for a vote.
See our link below for out specific concerns with the food safety bill.

  4. the new tea party congress should thow this piece of trash bill out shame on Sen Colburn I am sure the voters will Remember that at election Time

  5. It is totally underhanded the maneuvering which is going on both in the Senate and the House to over-ride the wishes of most Americans who don’t want Big Brother’s unhealthy intervention. It isn’t concern for the American Public, which motivates those who pass this burdensome legislation, which could wipe out the small, non-corporate American farmer.
It is a total sin, what is going on. However, It will boomerang back, because they and their families will be eating food which has no nutritional value, too.

  6. against HR 2751, no more voting on bill during lame duck sections. Close the doors on the white house till after the Christmas and new year holiday. It seems that our politicians represent them selves and not, we the people.

  7. Here we have Democratic leadership increasing the power of the FDA, restricting the civil and constitutional right of real food producers in clear support of Big Government and corporate food inc. interests.
Now we know the truth. All the rhetoric the Democratic, supported by so-called Progressives (Liberals) is all a bunch of crap and always has been. Don’t believe a word these fascists say when it comes to attacking conservatives or anybody who objects to their statist goals.
Throw the rest of them out in 2012.

  8. I need to preserve local and small farms & farmer’s markets (backbone of economy), and retaining the ability to purchase nutritional supplements not produced by major pharmaceutical companies (these major pharmaceutical companies only make synthetic nutritional supplements because they cannot patent what nature creates, and not everyone can get enough nutrition from their diet alone – especially those with malabsorption, food allergies, or the elderly (nutrient absorption decreases as one gets older) – synthetic nutrition is not as effective or healthy as real nature-madenutrition). “As the Senate originally passed S.510 last month, Sen Coburn said the bill will raise food prices; add $1.5 billion to deficit; add unfunded state mandates. It will not increase food safety one bite.”

  9. This is another abysmal example of the way our Senators manipulate bills to protect themselves and their lobbyist friends from “the light”. The people’s agenda means nothing to them. The “almighty dollar” rules supreme. God help us all. We are being used and abused by the very people we put in office to protect us. Wolves in sheep’s clothing.

  10. Thanks for all that you do to keep us Americans informed…IF WE DON’T SPEAK UP FOR OUR HEALTH, THEN WHAT? Lots of Bad stuff will be awaiting us, that’s what!
