1. DO NOT VOTE FOR THE HEALTHCARE BILL.

   1. I am very disappointed to see the misinformation in this alert. Frankly, it causes me to question the accuracy of other initiatives more directly related to complementary health care and nutraceuticals. To take your points in order:
      The bill would force people to purchase private medical insurance. I am not too happy about this myself, but if everyone, including young and healthy people do not join the risk pool to subsidize expenditures for the old and ill, insurance premiums will quickly rise even more than they are now especially since the bill would ensure that people with pre-existing conditions can purchase coverage — which they often can’t now. People should remember that they will become older and encounter their own health challenges sooner or later so risk pooling is reasonable.
      The bill does not, however, preclude insurance policies from covering alternative medicine; the government would establish minimum standards, not maximum standards. The fact is that very few policies currently contain coverage for alternative care. This would not change under the bill. It will be up to the public to choose companies who provide the coverage they want and to lobby the government to include coverage for natural care in federal programs such as medicaid, medicare and veteran benefits, and to approve and encourage such treatments in the future.
      Provisions for electronic health records make me nervous because we have seen so many companies breach their security systems and lose personal information. However, while mistakes may be made, the bill does not do away with the doctor/patient confidential relationship. Research shows electronic records in these days of specialization, over-prescribing of drugs, and harried health care providers will cut the cost of healthcare and improve its effectiveness by preventing mishaps that currently occur. Privacy is risked any time one uses a credit card, visits a website, puts a check in the mail, etc. While people may want to tell their representatives that they don’t like this provision, or urge that strong security measures be required — or even that the provision be repealed later — I do not believe that this provision justifies defeating a health care bill that will likely save tens of thousands of lives that are currently lost because people cannot afford to get the healthcare they need.
      Likewise, I have seen nothing in the bill that would suggest that people cannot pay separately for alternative health care, and cannot imagine that even Congress would do that.
      Lastly, this health bill will be expensive, but not as expensive as doing nothing. The most significant factor in the national debt is the snowballing rise in healthcare costs. The independent Congressional Budget Office has determined that the bill will save money and reduce the debt over the long-term. I believe we could save more if we created government policies to increase the use of alternative/complementary care, nutrition and nutriceuticals. This bill would not preclude people who feel this way from continuing to work to protect and advance that agenda.
      I realize many people are concerned that the government will have more control over the healthcare system, but personally I would prefer having a government — that we elect and can fire — regulating the insurance business than having insurance investors, millionaire executives, and bureaucrats who are paid incentives for denying coverage and increasing profits deciding what care I can get and whether I can have any coverage at all.
      I respectfully request that the Alliance stick to issues that bear more directly on its core mission and resist sending alerts without checking their facts. The issue of universal healthcare coverage is too important and has been the victim of too much misinformation and politicization to have the waters further muddied by the Alliance for Natural Health.

   4. I do not agree. Of ocurse I would prefer single-payer health care which included natural medicine, but we need the new provisions, however limited they may be. I want my son to continue to be insured after he reaches his 25th birthday. As it stands now, he will be cut off in October. I want to be able to get insurance if I lose my job no matter what my age is. Of course I prefer a public option. But I really do believe something is better than nothing. And once this is passed, we can work to improve it. I see it as a first step. And it is important if we want to move away from, however slowly, the excesses of the previous administration.
      So though I believe in and avail myslef of many natural treatments and preventative medicine, I urge people to contact their Congressmen to vote YES on this bill.

      1. I think you’re in the wrong place for this. Giving power to your government over your health care is tantamount to giving up your life. They, after all, condone medical treatment, e.g. insulin for type II diabetes, the pharmaceutical agenda, instead of teaching you how to avoid this simply avoidable disease. You see, most people on this website understand how to cure themselves of type II diabetes and heart disease and would never take medication or go to a hospital. I think that is the important thing here. Not, the one time you need a hospital b/z that is not in the scope of what is being offered you and that can be handled without this bill. Additionally, this bill has things in it that you don’t know about. Do you want to drive us further in debt? I don’t. I urge you to get away from medications and your doctors auspices and mainstream medical thinking and educate yourself by reading about the medical industry and what real health is.    5. I agree whole–heartedly that the current bill gives valuable citizen dollars to support the insurance/medical/pharmaceutical system which has not served the well-being of the people. And, most importantly, to me, it mandates the purchase of insurance from mainstream insurance carriers, otherwise, one pays a big penalty (750-2000) on your taxes.
      There is a RELIGIOUS EXEMPTION, however, which can be used for those, like me, who use holistic care exclusively. One can file a religious exemption (I know this, because the bill is patterned after the one in Massachusetts where I live. )
      The religious exemption is like the conscious exemption statute for those who promote peace. If you have “sincerely held beliefs” that make it impossible for you in good conscience to participate in a government program, you are “Religiously exempt.”
      You don’t have to belong to a religion like the Christian Scientists or the Quakers to be eligible to use the exemption.
      THERE WAS A PROVISION TO SUPPORT HEALTH CARE COOPERATIVES, which could be used as an alternative to the mandate to buy insurance. But, I don’t know whether it is in the current bill being discussed. I would love to know about that. It is very difficult for citizens to know what is being discussed. Our democratic institutions should be more transparent about what they are discussing.

5. Considering how rapidly healthcare is going downhill, I cannot agree with the ANH demand to do nothing and continue down that path.
   Physicians and veterinarians with whom I have spoken do not automatically dismiss natural medicine. I know one vet who uses numerous natural products and spent her own money to become certified in veterinary acupuncture.
   They do ask for proof of efficacy and safety as they do for any intervention. They also desire but do not demand a mechanism by which the intervention functions.
   Natural healing is rife with interventions that do not offer any of those. The proffered mechanisms for homeopathy and chiropractic are laughably contrary to even 20th century science.
   Both have also yielded injury or death, chiropractic via rupture of cervical arteries and homeopathy via toxic levels of zinc in Zicam. Is it unfair to ask a practicioner to “first do no harm”?
   The number of costly but ineffective “detoxification” programs is increasing by the day. I have seen none that was even single-blind tested or showed any blood results to back their claims. I do regularly read of patients (and have known one) admitted to the hospital due to nutritional deficiencies (primarily potassium) after such “internal cleansings”.
   Naturopathy has its place but must base its claims on double-blind testing, not just on historic use backed by anecdotal testimony. The same herb may be beneficial or toxic depending on the method of extraction.
   In short, I am not willing to discard the current bill just because it does not pay for healing crystals or ear candling.

We, the People, NOT we, the corporations. If you can’t see this, I wonder why you even bother to be here. The reason why healthcare is going downhill is because the masses of America have been getting “dumbed-down” for a couple of generations, now. The food is mass produced by mega-corporations who want more profits at the expense of future health, and I don’t just mean yours and mine, I mean the planet and any future generations. How many have died from Big Pharma concoctions like Phen-Phen? How many doctors will pump you full of carcinogenic radiation claiming that it will provide you the best defense of early detection(it’s called a mammogram)? While I agree with your comment about “do no harm,” I don’t think that modern medicine can speak those words anywhere. This brings us full circle, this bill is only good for the multimillion dollar corporations that are already profiting on the sick and niave. I want my freedom, I want to be able to have that choice, even if I have to pay for it out of my own pocket. I, also, want my privacy, my health should be between me and my physician, no one else needs to know about my physical wellbeing. Healthcare should be a right, like education and protection, in both, there are private and public options. This bill and virtually NOTHING that comes out of Washington will promote that because of all the corporations in the pockets of the politicians. You do make some good points, but I think you are missing ANH’s points.

   2. I agree with Mr. Cruder in supporting a less than ideal reform of Health care as something to insure the 30 million without insurance and to curb insurer abuse is needed. We can fine tune the bill in time. He is misinformed however in regard at least to Chiropractic and possibly homopathy. It may be true that we don’t know how these interventinos work, and indeed there are hundreds of medical therapies that we can show work in double blinded randomized controlled trials (RCTs), but we still have no idea how they work. I have seen litte to no RCT’s on homopathy so reserve judgment, but chiropractic has hundreds of RCT’s evidencing it as clealy effective for low back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, and headaches, and showing it more effective than traditinoal medical care for these. There is less evidence, but still tantalizing evidence of effectivness of chiropractic care for numerous other ailments like colic, bedwetting, and ear infectionss in children and backlabor in pregnant women). Do some research sir into the vast array of chiropractic studies in the peer reviewed literature. Further there is no evidence of any cause and effect connection between chiropractic adjustments to the neck and stroke or cervical artery disection. Indeed the rate of stroke following visits to a medical doctor is identical to that following visits to a chiropractor. People experiencing early signs of stroke like intense headache go to either type of doctor and afterwards have the full blown stroke. Neither type of doctor causes the stroke, but neither spots it either because it appears as simply a bad headache. And for either type of doctor, the incidence is estimated to be between 1 and ten in a million visits – hardly a big risk. You are more likely to get killed driving your car to see either doctor than suffer a stroke after seeing either. Chiropractic care is incredibly safe compared to medical care, and accordingly has extremely low malpractic insurance rates compared to medical doctors.

6. I am sorry but I cannot go along with you this time. for 70 years Americans have gone without healthcare for all its citizens and this is the first time we are this close. It is better to have something than nothing. In time the holes will be plugged because americans seem to alternate their presidents so if the Democrats dont get it now and the next President is a Republican it will be 16 more years of the status quo and that is unacceptable.

7. Your concerns are valid but a simple “no” will fall in with Republicans and understood as similar to Republican squelching of the bill. Voting no is not enough. We need to say why we are concerned and what we are in support of.Access to Natural medicine is crucial of course.    Allow me to review the most basic parameters surrounding so-called ‘Health Care Reform’ in America. What we are about to be saddled with, if this nightmare legislation passes into law, is a huge leap forward in totalitarian control and domination over our lives, coupled with a precipitous degradation in the quality and expediency of treatment received, and all of it delivered at tremendous cost and loss of Constitution guaranteed liberties. When the government FORCES you to buy “health” insurance, even if they tell you that the already overburdened U.S. taxpayers will subsidize the poor and unemployed (and for a time at least, illegal aliens), we are no longer living in a free republic, but rather have transitioned into a communist system.
   We have a foreign national who is fraudulently posing as President of the United States, ramrod-ed into office by the Illuminated Rockefeller empire (the very architects of communism in the 20th century), telling us how much “better” things are going to be for the poor and disenfranchised here in America when they pass their wonderful health care reform bill. Well, things aren’t going to be “better” for those of us who still cherish freedom and the desire to decide for ourselves what “health care” we want, and from whom we want it.
   For starters, there is no “reform” taking place because there was never a health recovery system in place. America’s medical care was overtaken by the pharmaceutical/allopathic medical industry at the beginning of the twentieth century and has been tightly clutched within their talons ever since. People don’t recover their “health” from orthodox allopathic medicine, they acquire disease symptom management, a huge difference. It’s a racket and their partners in crime have been the “health” insurance industry for the past 50 or 60 years. You don’t NEED either of them and you certainly shouldn’t be forced to pay protection money (called vigorish or ‘vig’ by mafia enforcers) to subsidize their racket or engorge a new army of government bureaucrats to help oversee the robbery and the corruptive influence that is sure to follow.

16. All one needs to do is look at how medicare/medicaid have been handled for so many years by government controls and you can see why this won’t work. One approach that would be “outside the box” would be to have those who have no insurance go to patient outcare centers manned by doctors/nurses in training to seek help for their health issues. I find it ludicrous that the full service hospitals manned by the highest paid people in the industry are just as accessible to those who have NO insurance as to those who pay hundreds of dollars a month for the same services-
    One other areas of abuse are the relationships between doctors, medical suppliers and the pharmaceutical companies- There’s so much collusion between all these parties its ridiculous! And when you factor in the craziness of how the doctors overcharge and the insurance companies willingness to only pay a certain amount makes for financial chaos that makes the recent economic meltdown look like childs play! I’m just glad I’m a man who needs no medical attention! (until its broken- right?)

17. I urge you to vote no on the health care bill. Although our system is in need of revising this is not the way. There are too many issues, too much expense and too many unanswered questions. Our nation has other needs now that are more important such as the economy and protection fro terrorists.
    One of the best ways to improve health of our citizens is through better quality food. Organic foods held to the proper standards, better regulating of companies that produce our food t eliminate these recalls and sickness/disease and death that result with their failure to hold to the standard.
    Smaller companies and farmers would go a long way to help this.

    I am completely at odds with this bill and petition you to vote no or absolutely no on it.
    Thid is a medical care bil that deals with approximately 20 % of the outcome assessments conducted by health care practitioners, in this case the 375,000 medical doctors and the hospital that serve them.
    There is nothing in it for the 4, 000,000 alternative , integrative, complementary and/or functional state-licensed or otherwise credentialed health care practitioners who make up the other 80%.
    Nor is there anything in it for the 44, 000,000 individujals who are health care practitioners for loved ones and friends. Are they “health-carers? Certianly!
    Medical care so carefully outlined in this billi is a small part of total health care and any health care reform revisions not being aware of and including the facts mentioned above ignores the fact that we are now in the 21st century not the 20th century where old solutions worked.
    The Internet, computers and instant and infinite information providing unlimited lieabilties along with the social networking concepts that have taken on new meaning to instant communication require new ideas.
    The key is sustainablity and there is othing in the 20st century thinking regarding health care is sustainable for other than the groups that have profited so much by 20th century thinking.

22. This reform measure sacrifices health freedom under the guise of health coverage for all (or almost all). Restricted treatments and the nonprivacy of medical records is not what living in this country is all about. Living under a corporate umbrella (big pharma, big insurance, big ag, etc) of questionable product and service motives so a few people can get rich is despicable.     Those who run our broken health care system would have you make it mandatory for all US citizens to buy into our broken monopolistic system of health care. This system so far has drained the US economy to the point where we are near financial colapse. This is not to mention the fact that health care in the US is substandard to countries who indorse natural health care.
    I am educated in holistic health care and would not consider using more than 90% of treatments that are covered under health insurance of any kind. Stop selling out the health of the American people. We deserve better than the lies broadcast by the media, the pharmaceutical companies, and the American Medical Association.     The world heath organization in 2005 chose Chinese Traditional Medicine as what they would like to see as the model of world medicine. That consist of Accupuncture, Accupressure, Herbs, diet,
    and excercise. That is a far cry from what we know as medicine in the US. Have you ever wondered why there are 1.3 billion Chinese? Do you wonder why half of people over the age of 50 who live in the US have some chronic disease requiring medication for the rest of their lives? 28. Although I have the greatest admiration and respect for ANH and agree with so much of your wonderful work, I must respectfully dissent here. This has been a hard decision for me as I too share your disapointment with this bill that so favors industry. My reasons for NOT opposing this bill are as follows:
    1) I am concerned that opposition may be taken to mean that I am against any kind of health care bill.
    I think this one will need some serious attention in future legislative sessions, but at least this would be a starting point.
    2) I believe that there are some things that “western medicine” treats well, especially certain acute health conditions. For these, people should not be denied because of inability to pay. It is true that many of these people will be treated anyway, but their care is likely to be more expensive, and the costs hidden in higher taxes and insurance premiums,
    3. I agree with the some of the other commenters that many health care providers are in fact doing that which might be called “alternative” or “complementary” or “integrative” or even “lifestyle coaching” and this could be one way to encourage this. .
    It would be great to have the “perfect bill” but this is not likely to happen in my lifetime. This is, I agree, a highly flawed bill, but I think it could be something to work with over the next several Congresses. For this reason I would support it.

29. As a dental hygienist as well as a massage therapist, I speak from experience regarding how insurance and governmental INTRUSIONS wreck personal and professional freedom. You need only read Atlas Shrugged to learn how this is going to turn out if this ROBBERY of our Republic is passed, in any method. To all the ‘looters’ who feel other people OWE them healthcare, I say “and whom do you suppose will provide you the care????”. Last I checked, slavery was abolished….no one can force doctors to work for free. Shrug, Atlas…shrug.

30. Funny, I was always told it is the will of the people and not the desires of the elected officials that is to be heard and heeded. It seems to me the people have spoken and the majority have said NO to this thinly disguised tax. Elected officials, do your job and listen to the will of the people and vote NO!!!!!!!!!!

31. I keep hearing from our president and others that there are abuses of insurance companies. It is quite clear to me that I would rather be abused by them as status quo (then improve upon that) than abused by my government. We do not want to give power to government. As it is, it needs to be smaller, function more smoothly with INCREASED responsibility for the populace. We want educated people who are helped by each other!! Not helped by the government. As well, we have friends in Europe who come here for healthcare because their system is run by the government and it is substandard. Moreover, we are not happy with the lack of due process. WE will not fund abortions or be part of this neo-liberal agenda that would ever think of asking someone to fund abortion. Also, people must focus on what keeps them healthy – and we believe that better food, organic, and better choices (READ LESS SUBSIDY FOR CORN) are what will truly make people healthier. Please begin to educate yourself on your lobbyers who wish status quo of the medical system and food and agricultural setup. And do what is best for the people.

32. All I know is that this so-called “progressive” version of “healthcare reform” will necessitate the hiring of 16,500 additional Internal Revenue Service employees. First of all, isn’t our IRS big enough already? Secondly, how many Americans will experience the wrath of our IRS due to this 2,000 page pece of legislation? Will our very own government use our U.S. Treasury Dept. to confiscate more & more private property of those who don’t submit to all the rules, regulations, restrictions, mandates, fees, fines, penalties, taxes?
    Besides the increase in IRS agents, there’s dozens of other additional bureaucracies created needing tens of thousands of new govenment employees to fill those positions. Who and, more importantly, how are we expected to pay for all of these new gov’t employee union members with their higher salaries, higher compensation packages, superior health care, guaranteed lifetime exorbitant pensions? This entitlement legislation named “health insurance reform”, along with the existing entitlement programs, will surely “break the bank” within a half-century or so.
    Our children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren will pay 70% of their income in taxes & fees when they eventually enter the workforce. That’s more akin to living a life of indentured servitude or that of a “serf”, than it is to living a life under liberty to pursue prosperity. I will be relocating to Panama, Costa Rica, Trinidad & Tobago, Brazil, Singapore, Switzerland, or maybe Russia’s Black Sea region. I haven’t made up my mind quite yet. Ciao….for now.
