Bill Protects Affordable CBD

A bill that would protect hemp-derived CBD from the FDA needs our support. Action Alert!

For a while now, we’ve been telling you about the FDA’s attack on CBD oil, a natural, safe, and non-addictive alternative to dangerous opioid drugs. We must support a bill that would protect hemp-derived CBD supplements from the federal government.

The bill (HR 841) is simple. It amends the law to provide an exemption for hemp-derived CBD from rules that apply to dietary supplements when there is an approved drug with that ingredient or if that ingredient is being investigated as a new drug.

Note that the other provisions of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 still apply to CBD. Given that the FDA’s position seems to be that CBD is a “new supplement” (in FDA lingo, a new dietary ingredient, or NDI), this means that before companies sell CBD they will need to submit information to the FDA demonstrating that the CBD supplement can be reasonably expected to be safe.

The regulation of CBD has become a fraught and confusing process. We sifted through the details in previous coverage. Suffice it to say, the FDA can’t be expected to allow affordable CBD on its own; we will need an act of Congress to settle the issue. Recall that the agency approved a CBD drug, Epidolex, for the treatment of seizures from two rare forms of epilepsy. The drug costs $32,500 per year.

History and experience demonstrate that the FDA will, when left to its own devices, do what it can to protect the approved drug and eliminate all other forms of CBD. We see the same thing happening with bioidentical hormones. As we reported previously, the FDA and its cronies are interested in protecting the marketplace for FDA-approved hormones and have an innate distrust of medicines, like compounded bioidentical estriol, that they do not control.

It is critical that consumers can continue to access affordable CBD. Dangerous opioids kill tens of thousands of Americans every year. CBD is a safe, non-additive alternative to these drugs with evidence to support its effectiveness for pain. CBD has also shown promise as a treatment for antibiotic-resistant infections like MRSA, which alone kills 90,000 Americans a year. The benefits of this safe natural medicine should not be reserved to those who can pay a $32,500 per year price tag.

  7. We ask that physicians be able to discuss EVERY alternative to horrible opiod drugs. They are addictive, totally destroy the colon and liver and leave a patient very depressed. CBD is a very useful tool to help manage debilitating pain and suffering people go through daily.

  11. Since Hemp derived CBD oil has been around for many years, it should not fall under the category of a “new supplement”. Please keep CBD affordable, so people do not seek dangerous opioids to treat pain. I rely on CBD daily to mitigate my pain levels that allow me to sleep.

  17. CBD needs to remain in reach of the average citizen. Too many people rely on painkillers that are addictive and destroy lives. CBD has helped my mother who had Parkinson’s, has helped me and my pets and has helped my 70 year old diabetic partner where other drugs could not, and did it safely. Please do not curtail our rights because the pharmaceutical companies want their fingers in the pie.

  21. CBD has been proven by scientists to help in many types of affliction from pain relief to managing stress and stomach issues. This healthy alternative to more invasive procedures or too-strong drugs is a boon for so many people suffering and not having enough money to pay for expensive doctors or treatments ; or choosing a simpler or more holistic way to heal. And, as I said the CBD has been proven to help in so many cases. Many medical doctors agree. Olease support the bill that supports many of your voters.

    telling everybody about this product. My brother uses the creme-form
    for his bad knee. He absolutely loved it. I also told my sister about CBD oil for her ailing 13-year old Rottweiler. She saw immediate improvement in his gait and his pain management is controlled.
    My daughter and her husband have a 14-year old pit bull named “Cujo”. Cujo was literally on his death bed. Fortunately, they started to give him CBD oil and he has a 100% better quality of life. He went from whimpering/crying in pain, and having a hard time getting up to a happy tail-wagging dog. This stuff makes small miracles happen!
    My wish is that anyone that has pain to try this stuff.

  28. A plant that is native to the North American Continent and is freely accessible and able to be consumed as a medical adjunct should NOT be regulated in any form or function.
    Hippocrates said let food be your medicine and medicine be your food. This is still true today.

  33. CBD, and cannabis in general, has been used for thousands of years. Probably does NOT need any more testing.

  36. CBD has been of benefit for many people in my life. I think it is outrageous not to support HR 841. Please keep CBD on the free market and more affordably priced. Thank you for your time!
