Heart Disease Drugs Cause…Heart Disease

A stunning study reveals the truth about statins. Action Alert!
Research published in the journal Atherosclerosis concludes that statin use increases coronary plaques, which limit blood flow and can lead to heart attacks and strokes. Yes, you read that correctly. Statins, medicines meant to prevent cardiovascular disease, are actually causing it. It should be the nail in the coffin for statins, but the crony FDA won’t do anything to threaten the mega-profits Big Pharma makes off of the millions of patients who buy them. We need to force the agency’s hand by creating a public outcry against these dangerous drugs so they are taken off the market.
The study took place at Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute in Los Angeles and involved 6,673 participants with no known history of heart disease. The patients who took statins were at an increased risk for obstructive coronary artery disease.
Statins are also overprescribed. A recent review points out that medical guidelines recommend the use of statins for people with no history of symptoms when their expected risk of developing heart disease over the next ten years is 10 percent—a threshold that makes about 3 out of every 10 adults eligible for statins. It is a boon for the pharmaceutical industry, but bad news for patients who will needlessly take a medicine that actually increases the risk of developing the disease they are tying to avoid!
Sadly, increased risk of heart disease is one among many dangerous side effects of statins:

  • Statins interfere with the production of coenzyme Q10, which supports the body’s immune and nervous systems, boosts heart and other muscle health, maintains normal blood pressure, and much more.
  • Statins weaken the immune system, make it difficult to fight off bacterial infections, and increase the production of cytokines, which trigger and sustain inflammation.
  • They make some patients unable to concentrate or remember words, and are linked to muscle and neurological problems, including Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
  • Statins inhibit the beneficial effects of omega-3 fatty acids by promoting the metabolism of omega-6 fatty acids, which increases insulin resistance and the risk of developing diabetes.
  • There is evidence that statin use blocks the benefits of exercise. Exercise increases the activity and numbers of mitochondria, cells’ “power plants” that process sugars and fat. The study found that with statin use, mitochondrial activity actually decreases with exercise.
  • Statins work by reducing the body’s ability to produce cholesterol, which is essential to brain health—the brain is 2% of the body’s weight, but contains 25% of the entire body’s cholesterol.
  • Statin users have a higher incidence of nerve degeneration and painmemory lossconfusiondepression, and a higher risk of ALS and Parkinson’s, according to Dr. David Williams in his July 2014 Alternatives newsletter. Statins also decrease carotenoid levels. Carotenoids, which are found in fresh fruits and vegetables and act as antioxidants, have a number of benefits, including protecting against cell damage, aging, and chronic diseases.
  • Statin drugs may also be driving Americans to overeat: a twelve-year study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that statin users increased their calorie intake by 9%, and fat consumption by 14.4%, over the study period, whereas those who didn’t take statins didn’t significantly change in either measure.
  • An animal study linked statin use to muscle damage. Animals that exercised on statins had 226% more muscle damage than those not given statins.
  • They affect the quality of sleep.
  • Statins increase the risk of prostate and breast cancer.
  • Statins are known to cause liver damage by increasing the liver’s production of digestive enzymes.
  • Statins also speed aging and lower sex drive.
  • Statins have been linked to aggressive and violent behavior in women.

Heart disease, as many of us know, is one of the leading causes of death in the US, killing about 610,000 people each year. Big Pharma—in the belief that cholesterol is the primary factor in heart disease—developed statin drugs that would lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease. The drugs, which have been accompanied by massive marketing campaigns, are huge moneymakers for the drug industry, to the tune of about $29 billion worth of sales in 2013. That’s the kind of outrageous money you make when you convince one in four Americans over the age of 45 to take statins.
All of the above-mentioned effects should be enough to yank statin off the market—and now there is evidence that they cause the illness they are meant to prevent. It is an outrage that they are still being prescribed and sold to millions of Americans. What more proof do we need that the FDA is owned by Big Pharma, that the agency uses its power to protect the drug industry rather than our health?

In addition, Dr. Mercola recommends a ketogenic diet, which actually increases fat intake, albeit using healthy fats. Other natural ways to increase heart health include: reducing grains and sugars in the diet, eating fermented foods, getting enough omega-3 fatty acids, optimizing vitamin D, and making sure you get enough sleep.
It is a crime that the FDA continues to allow the use of statins by millions of Americans when the evidence of harm is so clear and there are safer, natural alternatives that actually work. Statins must be taken off the market now.

  3. I just clicked on the “green” word “research” and it took me to the research abstract. However this information was published in a 2012 journal. Isn’t there anything more recent? Or, has this study been replicated at another university? I can’t pass along info from 2012.

    1. A more recent study would be great, but why wouldn’t a 2012 study still be valid? It’s not like the pharmaceutical industry claims to have anything better to offer. They’re still passing out the same toxic crap that they have for years. As long as people still buy into their hype, why spend time and money improving their product?

      1. I agree. That’s only 5 years ago. Hardly far in the past. The claims for the benefits of statins goes pretty far back with little to no change as well as the benefits of low fat diets. The latter is finally starting to be ignored, thankfully.

  4. Where is the link to your evidence that “bad cholesterol is essential?” The only credible evidence I have so far is that your liver will produce all the cholesterol you need. See the Pritikin Institute which has treated over 100,000 people successfully for heart disease over the past 40 years. Not to give out any specific numbers, but my total cholesterol level is well under 130 with no drugs, and I intend to keep it there.

      1. We could trade websites from now on and change no one’s ideas, more than likely. The main lipids required for brain health, and the ones most likely to be in short supply, are EPA and DHA, and I get my omega score tested regularly through the Life Extension Foundation. My omega scores are in the optimum range on all test results. None of them eat a lot of eggs. I do not take statin drugs or flu shots etc., so maybe there is one thing we can agree on. I had an uncle (by marriage) who used to tell me when I was a boy that he had eaten five eggs a day for breakfast for most of his life, and he had severe alzheimer’s well before he reached my current age. I also have a brother-in-law who used to tell me that he had drank at least twelve cups of coffee (which you approve of) daily for his entire adult life. He was disabled by alzheimer’s also, so I don’t consider eggs or coffee either one to be any guarantee of future brain health.
