The “Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act” is now in conference committee, the conferees have been named, and meetings have begun. We still have an opportunity to make sure the Waxman amendment threatening supplements doesn’t end up in the final version of the bill—if we act quickly.
On June 9, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi named ten members of the House Financial Services Committee to the conference committee: Frank (D-Massachusetts); Kanjorski (D-Pennsylvania); Waters (D California); Maloney (D-New York), Gutierrez (D-Illinois); Watt (D-North Carolina); Meeks (D-New York); Moore (D-Kansas); Kilroy (D-Ohio) and Peters (D-Michigan); Bachus (R-Alabama); Barton (R-Texas); Graves (R-Missouri); Issa (D-California); Lucas (R- Oklahoma); Smith (R-Texas); Royce (R-California); Biggert (R-Illinois); Capito (R-West Virginia); Hensarling (R-Texas) and Garrett (R-New Jersey).
The House members will now join the Senate conferees: Dodd (D-Connecticut); Shelby (R-Alabama); Johnson (D-South Dakota); Reed (D-Rhode Island); Schumer (D-New York); Corker (R-Tennessee); Crapo (R-Idaho); and Gregg (R-New Hampshire). Also appointed as negotiators are Senators Lincoln (D-Arkansas); Chambliss (R-Georgia); Leahy (D-Vermont); and Harkin (D-Iowa).
The first conference meeting was last Thursday. Estimates are that the bill might make it out of committee before the July 4 recess, your action now is critical.
However long the conferees take, now is the time make sure the conference committee removes the FTC powers expansion language currently in the House version of the bill.
We need to make sure that Waxman’s amendment threatening supplements, which was accepted in the House’s version of the bill but never came up in the Senate because of the pressure YOU placed on them, doesn’t get put back into the final, reconciled version of the bill that goes back to both chambers for final passage. This could be a devastating piece of legislation for anyone who uses dietary supplements.
If you have not already done so, please TAKE ACTION immediately! We’ve made so much progress—we can’t let this final opportunity slip through our fingers.

REMOVE ALL WAXMAN AMENDMENTS TO ANY BILLS. PERIOD.
Good grief, juust plain good common sense should make it incredably clear that we need our supplements -un changed- especially consideering all of the uniased research pointing to the benefits. Given the entire state of the Health Care environment & associated costs – it (to me) is sheer idioticy to mess with individual freedoms of choices & their own health. We do after all own some competency to be self informed & gather useful information about all of the possible alternative ways to improve our own health.
It is imperative that this Waxman amendment be tootally eliminated.
Supplements will help the Nation keep health care costs down. Don’t deny people the ability to keep their health optimum. Supplements are Safer than the alternatives.
Please fix the financial system but leave nutritional supplements alone. It is very important that we have the freedom to choose what we put into our mouths that we feel might help us, even if you do not agree.
We have some of the most safe supplements in the world, Please don’t send this industry underground or the safety won’t be there. You’d be putting us at much more risk.

The FDA was set up to make sure our prescription drugs are safe and effective. The FDA is unable to do this job but have changed their raison d’etre to rubber stamping big pharma’s wish list. Supplements didn’t have a thing to do with the financial crisis we face today. Prescription Drug Overdoses Rise

More and more Americans are landing in the hospital due to poisoning by powerful prescription painkillers, sedatives, and tranquilizers, according to a report released Tuesday. City-living middle-aged women seem particularly vulnerable.
“People have seen the headlines related to Heath Ledger, Michael Jackson, Anna Nicole Smith, and they think that’s tragic but maybe contained to Hollywood,” Dr. Jeffrey H. Coben of West Virginia University School of Medicine in Morgantown told Reuters Health.
“But the fact of the matter is we are seeing, across the country, very significant increases in serious overdoses associated with these prescription drugs,” Coben warned.
Between 1999 and 2006, U.S. hospital admissions due to poisoning by prescription opioids, sedatives, and tranquilizers rose from approximately 43,000 to about 71,000.
That increase of 65 percent is about double the increase observed in hospitalizations for poisoning by other drugs and medicines, Coben and colleagues found.
Opioids — examples include morphine, methadone, OxyContin, and the active ingredient in Percocet — are powerful narcotic painkillers that can be habit-forming. Some examples of sedatives or tranquilizers include Valium, Xanax, and Ativan.
What’s behind the rise in poisoning by prescription painkillers, sedatives, and tranquilizers? “There is not any single cause,” Coben said. “There is increasing availability of powerful prescription drugs in the community, and attitudes toward their use tend to be different than attitudes toward using other drugs, especially among young people. They report that prescription drugs are easy to obtain, and they think they are less addictive and less dangerous than street drugs like heroin and cocaine.”
Accidental — or unintentional — poisoning by opioids, sedatives, and tranquilizers rose by 37 percent during the seven-year study period, while unintentional poisonings by other substances increased by just 21 percent.
“Unintentional poisoning is now the second leading cause of unintentional injury death in the United States,” Coben and colleagues note in their report. Among people 35 to 54 years old, unintentional poisoning surpassed motor vehicle crashes as the leading cause of unintentional injury death in 2005.
Even people who take opioid painkillers for legitimate medical reasons are at risk of overdosing. In a study reported by Reuters Health earlier this year, researchers followed nearly 10,000 adults who had received at least three opioid prescriptions within 90 days to treat chronic pain like back pain. Of these, 51 experienced at least one overdose, and six died as a result. The researchers also found that the higher the painkiller dose, the more likely the patients were to overdose.
In the current study, Coben’s team found that intentional poisonings — suicide, self-inflicted poisoning, or poisoning someone else — from prescription opioids, sedatives, and tranquilizers more than doubled, from about 10,000 in 1999 to nearly 24,000 in 2006. That compared to just a 53 percent increase in intentional poisonings from other substances.
The biggest percent increase in hospitalizations for poisoning for a specific drug was a quintupling for methadone, according to the team’s report published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. This may be due to the more than 10-fold increase in overall retail sales of this drug from 1997 to 2006, they state.
Poisoning by benzodiazepines such as Xanax and Ativan — drugs that possess sedative, hypnotic, anti-anxiety, anticonvulsant, and muscle relaxant activities — rose 39 percent over the study period.
Poisoning by barbiturates, which also have sedative, hypnotic, and anti-anxiety actions, actually fell 41 percent, as did hospitalizations for poisoning by antidepressants (a decrease of 13 percent).
Hospitalizations from prescription drug poisonings most often involved women 35 to 54 years old living in urban settings. Most of the cases were unintentional, “although the intent of a large number of cases was undetermined,” Coben and colleagues note in their report.
Their findings stem from a comprehensive look at the U.S. Nationwide Inpatient Sample, a database that contains records for roughly 8 million Americans hospitalized annually.
“A multifaceted approach is needed” to stem the tide in poisoning by opioids, sedatives, and tranquilizers, Coben said. “Doctors need to perhaps rethink the types and quantities of medications they are prescribing,” he told Reuters Health. “And we need to get better messages out to the public in terms of the dangers associated with these medications and combinations of these medications that are being used.”
“We also need to think about law enforcement strategies with regard to illegal markets for distributing prescription drugs,” Coben said.

The supplement/ herb/ organic food movement is a burgeoning industry, and millions of us oppose any amendments or other actions to restrict our access to truly safe, healthy food. This is not about food safety, the amendment is about preserving profits of Big Pharma and the Agricultural industry- 2 industries that conspire to rob people of their health (Vioxx, HIV tainted blood products, hormones/ steroids/ arsenic in animal feed, and other unethical acts). I’ll be 70 in July and I’m extremely healthy, because of supplements and healthy food & exercise.
I have long been an admirer of Senator Waxman and his crusades to preserve the health and well being of the American people. He is a fighter for his beliefs and a crusader for good.
However, I find myself opposing his stance on the supplement industry. As a long term user of many vitamin and herbal supplements, I find that the medical physicians that treat me constantly tell me that I am doing the right thing as far as my health care is concerned and encourage me to continue my regimen. My electrocardiologist whose wife is an integrative physician, both affiliated with one of the most prestigious medical facilities in the Chicago area, tells me that most of his patients would “kill” to be in my physical condition. I credit it all to the supplements I follow and the homeopathic, acupuncture, and chiropractic treatments which I have availed myself of when the situation arose.
Your reevaluation of the supplement amendment would be most important to the welfare of so many. Thank you.

Dear Alliance for Natural Health: Supplements may be under far more threat of being taken off the market than you realize. Big Pharma is desperate in regarding certain healing supplements off the market.. especially free form amino acids. I know this for a number of reasons as follows: (1) I am nearly certain that Big Pharma monitoring of the Internet became aware of me over ten years ago due to my discovering a multi-stage natural therapy that could “adequately chemically correct” a state of severe depression in many so afflicted in as little as 6 to 8 hours. (2) Since I first put my son Willy’s amazing ADHD/bipolar and sickly childhood health all over the Internet in June 2006, I have lost six personal computers to hackers. I have also had three computers of family members hacked and disrupted during this time as well. In addition to this, since June 2006 I have regularly been hacked while using both a public library and a college library near me. (3) Since it was discovered that Willy’s baggie of supplements could resolve the hallmark symptom of schizophrenia of “hearing voices”, and do so within a matter of hours to a matter of days, I have had multiple unusual problems with my cell phone. (4) Five days after I met Kevin Trudeau at a health freedom conference this past January, and gave him and many conference attendees a package of blogs I had written, I am nearly certain that there was an attempt on my life. (5) Within a week of widely posting a blog on Bob Beck this past month, I am nearly certain there was a second attempt on my life. (6) What I know in regard to using supplements and other natural measures to correct depressive, bipolar, ADHD, and schizophrenic symptoms threatens the collapse of drug oriented medicine… if it becomes realized by the masses. Nothing would please the Pharmaceutical Cartel more than than to eliminate vitamin suppliments from American landscape. Vitamins do cure diseases, and that’s the last thing they want the American public to know. They have no intention of curing diseases because that would end their unscrupulous money making business with disease. That’s a cash cow they have no intention of eliminating. And what they’re doing in the name of health care is nothing short of genocide here in America as well as globally. Infact, the International Criminal Court of the Hague has charged the different pharmaceutical companies that make up the Pharmaceutical Cartel with “Crimes Against Humanity” that now numbers in the hundreds of millions dead globally due to their poisons they call drugs with deadly side effects. With their money they have silenced the media in America from allerting Americans as to what they’re really doing. The ancient Greeks had a saying, “When money talks, truth is silent.” So much for free press in America.
I have had numerous benefits from using supplements from improved hair and nail growth and strength to less joint pain and eliminating depression without drugs. I have not taken prescription medications (except for pain after surgery) for any period of time for several years now (I’ll be 65 soon). Supplements have been used far longer and with very few incidences of “recall due to related deaths and adverse reactions” (and they are usually manufacturing problems rather than the supplement) than patent medicines. If the government were to focus on the real killers – and that would include messing with the food supply (GMO) instead of wasting time and our money on safe, and effective supplements so that big pharmas can make more, we would all be better off. Time for John Q Public to take responsibility for their own health instead of sheepishly following what’s on TV or in the news about what drugs they “must” have.

Don’t let the W@axman Amendment be tacked on to the Wall Street Reform bill. My son has autism and takes 15-20 supplements per day without which life would be much more difficult. The last two report cards he made AB honor role. Please don’t make supplements harder or more expensive to come by.
I am sure that Congressman Waxman is meant well with his amendment, but I believe that it is a very bad idea and should NOT be included in the reconciled bill presented to the President. Letting the FDA control supplements would allow the drug industry to gouge us even deeper than they currently do. Do not include the Waxman amendment.

What really needs to get done is a house cleaning. When several of the top administrators in the FDA are previous employees of large pharmeceudical (sp) companies, and lobbyists are giving huge kickbacks, not only to politicians, but to our physicians, we have definitely got a whole pack of wolves in the hen house. I attended a town hall meeting about 20 years ago hosted by Rep, Waxman. the audience was filled with seniors almost all of whom were on dietary supplements and vitamins. Yet Rep Waxmasn persisted in his support to control them somehow. He is anti supplements and has been for years. I write him almost every week about his support for the corrupt FDA and their crusade against supplements. I have asked him to check into the FDA approval of the following drugs;
avandia, heparin, paxil, hyroxycut, zelnorm, celebrex, risperdal, rezulin, viozz and bextra.
and how many deaths and hospitalizations from these drugs.

I have been on food supplements for 30 years. I am intelligent enough to decide what is best for my body and I will not be forced to take prescription drugs (because you have taken my life force away) that destroy other parts of my being while under the guise of healing one ailment. When drugs that the FDA gives the OK to cause more emergancy room visits than the illegal ones, it proves to me they don’t have the brains to make my health choices for me! They use consultants that have financial ties to big pharma, they are not capable of being unbias. They have a disinsentive to find cures for diseases and let that knowledge be passed to the general public, yet now you want to give them the power to take away our choices. You can go to the internet and find studies on what works for what disease, and in the next sentence will come the line to the effect, that gives us a place to start looking NOVEL thing that does the very same thing that some natural compound already does. We don’t need more regulation, we need a freer flow of information, for instance that limonene would be good for you if you have breast cancer, that if you have MS, you probably shouldn’t eat peanutbutter or take fish oil, but if you have Parkinson’s you should. My guess is that one of those very consultants knows why, but won’t tell, and I KNOW A NAME! And if this man doesn’t know why, he isn’t smart enough to be a paid consultant, especially with my tax dollars. I he is smart enough, then he is one unethical scum of the earth. I have been using supplements for nearly 30 years, I will be 70 next month and take absolutely no prescription drugs whatsoever, I just do not need them, because I take control of my own health instead of listening to the Drug Lords in big Pharma, who send out sales reps. to EDUCATE Doctors, since when was a salesman qualified to educate a Doctor? or are the Doctors just so ignorant as to believe all the hype that they are given.
We must preserve our right to have the supplements that we want and which do work to help our bodies without the dreaded side effects of Prescription Drugs.
What in the world Makes Henry Waxman think that we are all so ignorant as to do his bidding, just because he is so ignorant about the real world, or is he so wrapped up in the Drug Lords Pockets??
It is a know fact that the medical community as a whole kill over 200,000 of us each year and no one says a word about it, and prescription drugs are a huge part of that Number, but one person ignorantly misuses a supplement along with whatever combination and the whole world is up in arms against the supplement industry. Give me a break

I demand the freedom to make my own health choices. Americans are not the stupid, lazy couch potatoes these arrogant fools want us to be. I don’t know if he’s up for re-election, but the wisest thing the people of California can do is DUMP WAXMAN the next chance they get. He is no friend of the American consumer.
Instead of the Waxman amendment (or the McCain bill), We the People need a law which legally establishes the moral FACT that a doctor is committing a crime each time s/he prescribes a drug with known harmful effects to someone for whose condition there exist other treatments and/or therapies which do not have harmful effects. It’s as if a school crossing guard tells the children to cross the street when s/he knows there is a large vehicle approaching at high speed. The guard is trained in basic traffic safety situations, and is responsible for the safety of children as they cross the street. The guard is aware that a large, rapidly-moving vehicle presents a hazard to the children. Perhaps the vehicle manages to stop in time. Perhaps one or more child(ren) is injured. The crossing guard has committed a crime by sending the children into harm’s way, failing in his/her duty to safely shepherd the children across the street.
Every time a doctor prescribes an NSAID like Tylenol, well-documented to cause severe liver damage and sometimes death, that doctor is breaking a moral law. Feverfew and other herbs, and some therapies like acupressure, can cure pain without the risk of permanent and potentially fatal liver damage. Instead of passing laws limiting people’s access to herbs, supplements and treatments which can restore and maintain health, the USA needs a law which recognizes the criminality of knowingly prescribing a harmful substance at harmful dosages when there are alternatives which are safe or at least less harmful. This needs to be separated out from malpractice law, which ends up being a money game among insurance companies. It needs to be recognized and legislated as the criminal act it truly is.
Think of the long-term sea-change this simple and needed law would bring: If a doctor can go to jail for prescribing the latest poisonous mutation-generating “wonder drug”, he or she will educate him- or herself about safer alternatives, and prescribe them. Doctors who prefer to ignore, scorn and shame patients who present information about less-harmful alternatives to statins, NSAID, psychotropic drugs and other poisons, would be setting themselves up for a vacation in prison.
This would turn the tables on the drug companies, because doctors would begin demanding more than just FDA rubber-stamp approvals, bought and paid for with profits from dying people. Doctors would choose to begin treatment with the safest known alternatives rather than the newest patented drugs for which doctors receive generous kick-backs (bribes) when they prescribe said drugs. Such a law would be the game-changer needed to turn the tables on the harmaceutical cartel. (No, it’s not a typo – I left off the P in pharmaceutical deliberately. The resulting term is more accurate.)
