What became of Senator Dick Durbin’s (D-IL) attempt to pass more regulations on dietary supplements.
Recently we alerted ANH members about another supplement sneak attack from Senator Durbin that would institute a mandatory listing requirement for dietary supplements. The good news is that Sen. Durbin has, so far, held off on introducing this legislation, so ANH member advocacy alongside other stakeholder actions have likely deterred him. We are, however, continuing to reach out to Congress to oppose mandatory listing for supplements since we know Sen. Durbin is still looking for an opportunity get it through.
We know Senator Durbin’s goal is, and has been, to create a mandatory product listing with the FDA, which seems innocuous but is not. The problem is that FDA is separately completing a process to eliminate every supplement from the market that doesn’t meet “new supplement” notification requirements, which are akin to new drug requirements, and the FDA needs Sen. Durbin’s list to locate and pull an estimated 41,700 supplements from the market.
Such notification requirements may seem reasonable, even laudable, but they will restrict consumer access to supplements. Drugs can afford these types of requirements because they are patentable in a way natural food supplements are not, which means that supplements do not have the ability to recoup the costs of complying with additional regulations. This will either force companies to go out of business or it will make supplements so expensive that they are priced out of the market.
Mandatory listing is also a solution in search of a problem since we know that supplements have a consistently sterling record of safety.
We will continue to closely monitor the situation and update you accordingly. In the meantime, we need to keep up the pressure to make sure this bad proposal doesn’t move forward.

Nutrition supplements are helpful to many people’s health. They are foods that people would like to have to supplement their diets. For example, vitamins like D3, chewable vitamins C, and rutin as well as many others, that people like to take that they don’t enough in there meals. We don’t want these things to be regulated by doctors prescriptions, for example. That would make these healthy foods too expensive for many people if they were regulated by, for example, through doctor prescriptions.
Congress to oppose mandatory listing for supplements since we know Sen. Durbin is still looking for an opportunity get it through.

His proposal to require the listing of all dietary supplements with the FDA is a prelude to banning them altogether by requiirng cost prohibitive new drug approval and using Codex regulatins to place all US dietary supplements under international law. This is both Unconstitutional and a sellout to the existing market monopolies of Big Pharma. We need competioon in the market place that is now all but impossible due to the growth of regjulations that creates a financial blockade against all low cost medicines. We need an emendment to the definition of drug under the FDC Act that has exlusions including the use of food as medicine and all edible plants and all other non-patentable remedies omtmeded fpr tje prevention or mitigationof disease in man or animals. Only adding an exlcusion clause to the definition of “drug” will open the door to hundreds or low cost remedies to be made available to all Americans.

Vitamins are not drugs and do not need to be listed. They are only supplemental for needed nutritional supplements. The pharmaceutical companies should not have power over vitamin, profits from them or who takes them.

This is going to be a another stupid attempt at curtailing a humans right to choose. Oh yeah I have been pharrma drug free because I know how to use supplements effectively. They work mostly without side effects I have very healthy ever since no brainer for me.
Dear Sirs we need the natural herbs that was given to us by the allmighty God that has created evrything these herbs gives us life and not a early grave like the so call man made crap which is drugs I do not take drugs at all and Iam very healthy and I will be turing 69 years old this month of August because I take care of myself with the herbs that God has given me so I think everyone needs to change for the drug addction to freedom. So we need natrual prodcts more than ever.
Our bodies require certain vitamins, minerals, and other supplements that our food just doesn’t supply. It is necessary to take vitamins to keep our bodies at optimum level thus activating our own immunity system while keeping us healthy. The farm industry came out in the 1920s stating that the soil was deficient in necessary minerals to offer good healthy food. Nothing has changed since then but only has gotten worse. Food is picked way before it is even close to being ripe and is expected to ripen while in the shipping, storage, and while on display for sale. This is not working well at all. Prices keep going up and the quality keeps going down. We need our vitamins to stay healthy.
