An Aspirin a Day…Doubles Heart Attack Risk?

Those taking aspirin every day to thin blood and reduce stroke risk, take heed.
Researchers have found that, compared to those taking warfarin for atrial fibrillation (irregular and fast beating of the heart that can lead to stroke), patients taking aspirin were 1.9 times more likely to suffer a heart attack. The same paper found that a new class of drugs called direct oral anticoagulants also doubled the risk of heart failure for patients with atrial fibrillation.
Warfarin (also called Coumadin) comes with a host of nasty side effects. Given this predicament, consumers may be looking for alternative options.
Fortunately, there are natural products that reduce inflammation and improve cardiovascular function:

  • Aspirin derives from salycin, which comes from the bark of white willow trees. This natural product can be taken to relieve pain and fight inflammation.
  • Nattokinase, an enzyme made from fermented soy, accomplishes many of the same good things without the bad side effects.
  • Fish oil and exercise also can improve cardiovascular health.
  • Other natural antiinflammatories might also be a good idea, depending on the advice of your integrative doctor.

By the way, aspirin has plenty of other scary side effects too—like internal bleeding. Read the full story here.

  1. The VA put me on low-dose aspirin back in 2001 and I weighed 196lb, by 2010 my weight went up to 265lb. Stopped the aspirin in 2010 thru 03/2017, started again at 218lbs and in on month gained 11lbs. Well, stopped almost a week now and I’ve lost 2.7lbs. Maybe, some medical research time should be focused on if “Aspirin causes weight gain”?

  2. Incredibly irrsponsible journalism!! The inference you unashamedly present is that daily aspirin CAUSES an increase in cardio morbidity. The study however merely states that aspirin taken daily by people afflicted with A-fib are at greater risk than those who take Warfarin…it did not not state they are at greater risk than those who take NOTHING. Nor did it mention dosage. Daily low dose aspirin reduces the risk of stoke among the general population and significantly reduces the risk of colorectal cancer. You should be sued for giving bullish*t article like this…not to mention it’s gleaned from the Daily Mirror, the trashiest amog many trashy papers in UK.

    1. Yes, relative to Warfarin not compared to those who take nothing. That really stood out to me in the article. Very misleading. However I do look for alternatives to both.

  3. Based on my visit and specific inquiry with my cardiologist yesterday, my 86mg daily aspirin is exactly what I need at age 80 to keep me ticking. I’ve had bleeding ulcers from full dose aspirin and other NSAIDS, but NO problems with the little dose at all. I’d say the article is irresponsible and misleading as well as confusing.

  4. “Aspirin May Increase Heart Attack Risk In People With Atrial Fibrillation” or “Study of 30,000 NHS patients with atrial fibrillation found they were at higher risk if they took aspirin” might
have been less misleading titles for the article. Additionally, the statistics are relative differences between aspirin not absolute risks which are also misleading to the layperson. With all the “Fake News” out there, honesty and clarity matter.

  5. From SwansonVitamins, I take a 40,000 unit Serrazyme (serrapeptase) capsule twice per day at 7 AM and again at 10 AM. The first evening I felt and heard a momentary turbulence go through my carotid arteries as I laid my head on the pillow, so now at age 62 I believe I am protected from stroke if I continue taking serrapaptase.
Serrapeptase is supposed to cleanse the circulatory system, so I am assuming it will protect me from a heart attack as well.
Nattokinase amazingly did get rid of my elderly Mom’s gnarly, hard blood clots on the top of her wrist within a couple days, but she had to take 8 capsules of the Doctor’s Best 2000 FU per day.
I had left bicep pain (obviously clots) after a blood withdrawal last year and the following week more bicep pain in the right bicep from a too tight automated blood pressure cuff which crushed my bicep.
Within a week I could feel the clots on the left side of my heart. I tried taking nattokinase but it didn’t help. I read about sodium citrate that is used to liquefy cheese for nacho sauce, so I ordered a couple pounds from Amazon. I thought it might liquefy blood clots, and it did and relatively quickly, I would say within a few days if I recall.
I took I think a level teaspoon 3 times per day and within days it really got rid of the clot pain. I took it for probably 3 months but it has a lot of sodium so I discontinued it for serrapeptase which I continue to take. Nattokinase seems too weak I thought compared to serrapeptase.
I found out about serrapeptase from someone who had recovered nicely from a stroke by taking Doctor’s Best 120,000 unit serrapeptase 3 times per day. Carotid artery blockage went from 30% blocked to 10% blocked in 6 months.
One reviewer wrote that Swanson’s 40,000 unit Serrazymes worked better for him than the higher dose 120,000 unit Doctor’s Best serrapetase, and I believe him although I haven’t tried the Doctor’s Best serrapeptase.
I had suggested chicken sternum cartilage collagen Type 2 to this stroke recovered person who was able to cancel their hip replacement after 6 months of I think 1 capsule per day. Chicken sternum is available at SwansonVitamins and PipingRock. This person’s friend canceled a knee replacement after the same 6 months of taking chicken sternum and no longer had knee pain and could stand in line without having to sit down. So I like chicken sternum for filling in cartilage in the joints which it did for my knees which were loose and knocking around in their sockets, but now are normal and tight. Not every joint heals every time. My shoulder never healed but it is not painful.
