Could Congress Legalize Raw Milk?

raw milk legislationThe natural health community has been touting the benefits of raw milk for years. Now there are two bipartisan bills in Congress to help legalize it. Action Alerts!
In a victory for supporters of the raw milk movement, Reps. Thomas Massie (R-KY), Chellie Pingree (D–ME), and a bipartisan coalition of eighteen other lawmakers, have introduced two congressional bills:

  • The Milk Freedom Act of 2014 would overturn the interstate ban on raw milk, as well as provide relief for small, local producers who have been harassed, fined, and prosecuted for distributing unpasteurized dairy.

Meanwhile, local legislators aren’t waiting for Congress to act: ten states—California, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, and Oklahoma—are all considering legislation to legalize or enhance the sale of raw milk.

Why, after years of grassroots activism, are we finally seeing these results? Increasingly, citizens and legislators are appalled not only by the industrial food complex, but by the FDA’s targeting of small family businesses. For example, in 2011, the FDA conducted a year-long sting operation on an Amish dairy farmer, which climaxed in a 5 a.m. raid and the destruction of his business.

Raw milk is natural and healthful. The government estimates that 1% to 3% of Americans are drinking it. As the Weston Price Foundation notes in their Real Milk campaign, people are 35,000 times more likely to get sick from other FDA-protected foods than from raw milk.

Opposed to our position are the mainstream media and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In response,   many raw milk producers have taken the proactive step of securing certification from the Raw Milk Institute (RAWMI); some take more precautions than required by the state and by RAWMI, adding an extra layer of on-site testing before delivering milk to clients.

It should be noted that the government has long had an anti-raw milk political agenda, no doubt linked to its close ties to massive dairy companies and Big Farma—an agenda which these bills threaten.

Action Alerts! Please ask your congressional representative to support Reps. Massie’s and Pingree’s raw milk bills. Take Action!

  1. Raw milk is natural and healthful. The government estimates that 1% to 3% of Americans are drinking it. As the Weston Price Foundation notes in their Real Milk campaign, people are 35,000 times more likely to get sick from other FDA-protected foods than from raw milk.

  2. I remember receiving Milk in Glass Bottles, Delivered by the Milkman. We had to shake the bottle in order to mix the cream (which was on the top in the bottle) with the milk. As far as I remember, that milk was not pasteurized, and no harm came to us. That was back in the 1940’s and 1950’s, before the government insisted that milk had to be pasteurized.
As far as I am concerned, the government can stay out of my life, and attend to just governmental business, which does not include what I believe is for the benefit of myself.

  3. If Congress passes this legislation for raw milk, it will be because big dairy has positioned themselves to take advantage and control. That’s the real world in the good old USA. You get all the freedom and government you can afford to buy.

The Interstate Milk Freedom Act of 2014 would allow the interstate shipment of raw milk between two states where the sale of raw milk is already legal.
Please support these bills. We should be doing everything we can to support local, natural, farming practices. Big Ag is responsible for much of our pollution, antibiotic resistance, and other ills; these are the sources of danger we should be worried about, not raw milk from grass fed naturally pastured cows.

  5. Congress, senate, president….all lame. Why am I pleading for raw milk? Your minds are ate up and deranged. Maybe because you don’t drink or eat real food? Just a thought, since there is obviously lack of thought taking place within the ranks of such men as yourselves. When you men and women are charged with treason.

  6. Oklahoma – sending to the Governor, Mary Fallon, required entering a “puzzle” code; I did it three times and did it correct each time, but it continually said I was entering the wrong numbers.
Thanks for the heads up on this issue. I’m not a dairy user, but I believe if people are they ought to have the any actual true nutritional value present.

  8. Today’s youngsters have ingested GMO’s, immeasurable amounts of antibiotics and a myriad of other drugs that my generation were fortunate enough to not be exposed to. Consequently, I firmly believe that those who are in a position to “right this wrong” are morally obligated to investigate this, and do so without a kickback from those who would lose profits by allowing raw milk to be legalized.

  9. I have raised my children on raw milk and have never had any problem with the milk. I would like to be able to buy raw milk again. I think it should come from small farmers, because they keep their cattle cleaner than the big factories.

    1. I live in SC and am blessed to be able to buy raw milk. I just went to the farm today and bought 3 gallons. My family loves it. Everyone that wants to buy it raw should have the opportunity to do so. We should have the right to choose.

  10. The Milk Freedom Act simply makes sense. Isn’t this country founded on principles of choice? You don’t have to drink raw milk – heck, you don’t have to drink milk at all! You can choose mainstream medicine, alternative choices or a combination. That is the inherent blessing of our country – the freedom to choose.

  11. If we, the people, recognize these bills and they are passed as law, that validates the standing that the government has any right to ban raw milk in the first place. Also means that they can
repeal the bill in the future once their laws/bills are recognized as legal/moral, which they are not.

  12. Raw milk has been been providing a nutritious food for hundreds of years. Only in this century because of tainted milk from sick cows and a tb scare has it been banned esp in the US where pasteurized milk is big business. Not that it provides a healthy alternative to raw milk. Quite the opposite. Raw milks track record compared with pasteurized milk is light years ahead. Our entire food supply system has been compromised including access to raw milk. We americans demand access to nutritionally rich foods including raw milk.

  13. While plague do happen in the World; lets only look at the USA after many Agencies for Health bureaucracies; with good intentions. The mass producers of farm produce has indirectly benefited the pharmaceutical corporation. Neither allows citizens input; regardless of major political parties! Each is more influenced by powerful bureaucrats; which are influenced by major PAC. Both are misdirecting our Presidential Administrations for the last 40 years; along with those we elect to represent our District. The ‘blind leading the blind’ continue to disenfranchise those that are trying to serve us as small farmers’ “to our health”. It is an uphill battle for honest people about real health! When The Pentagon; who prefers War Toys into the trillions, for self interest. Healthy living is not a fit!

  14. Raw milk is wonderful and people should be allowed to drink the healthiest milk on the planet. Unfortunately, the politicians listen to the milk producers cry poor. I hope it will change.
