Yesterday, Connecticut passed a law requiring foods with genetically engineered ingredients to be labeled—and it’s all thanks to your grassroots activism!
Connecticut has taken a first important step. The House version of its Label GMO bill (which ANH-USA helped draft) passed the Connecticut Senate unanimously on Saturday, and passed the legislature 134 to 3 on Monday. Our hope is that this bill will inspire neighboring states to take similar action so the trigger can come into effect as quickly as possible.
The bill now goes to Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s desk to be signed into law, and there good reason to believe he will do so—he has already issued a statement of support of the bill.
Unfortunately, the House version had the provision requiring four states to pass similar GMO labeling laws, so long as those states in the northeast region have a combined population above 20 million (it was originally 25 million, but the language was amended). We would have preferred that the legislature had passed the stronger Senate version of the bill, which carried the standalone provision we told you about last week, but this nevertheless sends a strong message that Americans demand to know what is in their food!
Once again, we must give you the credit for your superb response to our Action Alert. Now—residents of other states in the Northeast, start petitioning your legislators for a GMO labeling bill in your state!

Wow. A legislature not bought and paid for by Monsanto. I’m opening a bottle of wine tonight.
This makes me happy, maybe my state of Indiana can do this too!
How about a law that requires companies who use bleached flour to state what the bleaching agent is? Alloxan was first used to induce diabetes in test animals is now used to bleach flour!
Further, bakers used to put VITAL iodine in bread but were told to switch to hazardous bromine!
Why do we see so many schemes to poison us? Well, Nobel Laureate, Paul Samuelson wrote that the Federal Reserve is an “omnipotent counterfeiter” and the Federal Reserve said their system “works (us) only with credit” that would keep its value “if there were fewer people bidding against each other.” What would those omnipotent counterfeiters not do or persuade us to do to insure the permanence of their omnipotence? Did they tell their supreme court to legalize abortion and tell their Congress to subsidize milk, sugar and tobacco and tell their EPA and FDA

The country has long history been controlled by capitalist. They control major media, lobbying activity which hide many truth and fool American around. Now I can see some light of changing.
I praise for more and more people to be waked up eventually for good
This law should be passed! Enough is enough
Thanks Connecticut for starting the ball rolling.

I live in CA and our elected officials don’t seem to care about our health. As a Senior my health is important to me and my family. I don’t want any product that has GMO modify. I have been trying for years to eat healthy and read labels so I am staying healthy.
I am very allergic to artificail sweeteners. This should be labeled so it is easy to read. I wonder what ths artificial sweeterers are doing to our kids. I try and buy organic and have ask our elected officials to start a program to make our farms all organic.
I don’t buy any products or produce from foreign countries.
I found frozen Oriental Vegetables at Costco’s, with Chinese grown veg. There is a recall on mixed berries from Costco’s, why are we buying berries from Turkey? Our food supply is very important and we much make sure we are safe and buying from China and other foreign countries is not a good idea. I buy no Mexican produce! I live close to the borders of Mexico. The produce from Mexico and the CA government allowing illegals to stay and more green card workers, this is putting our farmers out of business. GOD BLESS OUR COUNTRY.
GO CONNECTICUT!
Thank you, Thank you. This is such an important step in addressing proper food labeling. I don’t see or understand the need for requiring neighboring states approval and copy cat action. But one step forward is better than none.
In my opinion, the need for the triggering condition is to prevent it from taking effect. What other purpose could it have?
Hats off to CT for requiring GMO labeling. It is time for MA to do the same. Let’s send a strong message to Monsanto, that they are not the “KING of DICTATING TO THE PUBLIC WHAT WILL BE”.
Let MA be the second New England state to require GMO labeling.
Most of the country is against the GMO foods, lets start the change.
We hire these poloticians to carry out our responsible wishes in protecting our best interests. It is high time fo all state governments, including Massachusetts, to start representing their constituents by following the Connecticut precedent. Monsanto, Dow, Dupont and others being allowed to dictate the rules is unconscionable and, should be unacceptable in America.
great news. i hope more states and it’s constituents wake up and be brave to pass the GMO-labling bill
Connecticut has taken a step in the right direction. Perhaps Arizona will do likewise… if we can persuade our Senators that the issue is important enough.
Finally……this is VERY exciting………………..goodbye Montsanto !!!
You can bet that people will not back down when it comes to speaking the truth about GMO’s and corporate control of our food supply. YES to local, small farmers. YES to organic, pesticide free food, and ABSOLUTELY YES to transparent labeling! We will follow Connecticut’s lead!
This would never have happened in a republican state. But, I’m still not sure what everyone is so excited about. If I understand correctly, Connecticut’s 5 neighboring states have to pass a similar labeling requirement before Connecticut’s labeling law is triggered. When do you think that will happen, if ever? What role did Monsanto play in getting that trigger in to the bill? What role will Monsanto play in sabatoging a similar bill in the 5 neighboring states?
Would you care to list CT’s 5 neighboring states?
What I’m wondering is how this will jam with what the US Senate is currently working on – The Monsanto Protection Act, which would nullify this law in this state.
From what I understand, this Federal law would usurp local and state laws that may be voted on by a states’s population. In other words, even if a state and its residents decide that they want labeling, this Federal law would knock that down.
Monsanto, Dow, Syngenta, et.al., DO NOT want you to know. And your Senators may be on their mailing list for donations.
I’m writing Levin & Stabenow many letters to ask them directly why they are currently voting to keep me from being allowed to know what’s in my food!
People wake up!
Do we really need our food modified with fish scales and other pesticides?
Take action…join a writing campaign to the senators, mayor, legislature, friends, facebook, and anyone anywhere who eats food!

It has finally happened, hats off to Connecticut, at least the majority of democrats cannot be bought and paid for to undermine our health and environment for the almighty dollar from which the Neo-con republicans worship, they will sell their soul for a buck and screw us in the process and likewise reward the Federal Disease Administration which is tied to the hip with big bad pharma to keep us sick and sicker to line their pockets and make sure we never collect a dime on Social Security and remember for the longest since way back they have sought to get rid of it and us or to privatize so their gain is our loss, ain’t democracy grand, it is if you have lots and lots of money so bought and paid for is the new norm for it’s the best government money can buy and the average Joe is not in or part of it just the elites of Mount Olympus Washington.
We label poisons.
Therefore, we MUST label GMO’s.
This bill will only pass if 5 other states pass similar bills and 2 of those states need to boarder CT
A Haunting in Connecticut part 3. This time, it’s the big corporations who are being haunted. LOL!
Great news! I hope we can get a similar bill passed in Michigan.
great job Connecticut, show the rest of this country what you guys are made of, that you have humane values and not supportive of any confounded special interest groups.
great job Connecticut, you have set a life saving example!!!
