Urgent Action Alert on TWO GMO Amendments!

This morning we learned of a dangerous set of policy riders which the biotech industry was able to get inserted into (and buried within) the House Agriculture Committee’s discussion draft of the voluminous 2012 Farm Bill. These riders represent significant changes to the Plant Protection Act (PPA), which will create serious risks to farmers, the environment, and public health by forcing the rushed commercialization of genetically engineered crops. They would also eliminate all meaningful review of the effect GMO crops may have on our environment or our health.
This is a new set of riders unrelated to the rider we warned you about in prior weeks. That amendment—in the Agriculture Appropriations Bill—is still alive and also needs to be opposed. More information on that below.
The new riders, the ones we just became aware of in the farm bill, would outlaw any review of GE crop impacts based on the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the Endangered Species Act (ESA), or any other environmental law. And no agency other than USDA would be allowed to provide analysis.
Note that under this new proposal, even if the unexpected happened and the pro-GMO USDA did report issues, the information still wouldn’t affect the approval decision! So clearly it doesn’t matter what environmental analysis anyone comes up with. It won’t have any effect on the approval of genetically engineered crops.
These riders also establish unworkable deadlines and backdoor approvals—if the crops aren’t reviewed and approved within an absurdly short time, they would default to immediate approval and commercialization. This, together with the diminished environmental analysis, simply makes a mockery of USDA’s GMO crop reviews. It is one of the most blatant examples of crony capitalism at work that we have seen.

The bill is scheduled to be debated in committee on Wednesday morning, so we have only a very narrow window in which to act! Please write to the House Ag Committee chairman and ranking member, as well as your congressional representative, and tell them you want these riders removed from the Farm Bill. Please Take Action NOW!

Two weeks ago we reported on a pro-GMO amendment in a different funding bill, the House Agriculture Appropriations Bill. This amendment would strip federal courts of the authority to halt the sale or planting of illegal, potentially hazardous genetically engineered (GE) crops—even if a court has told them to stop—while USDA is still assessing potential hazards.
The provision specifically mandates that the Secretary of Agriculture shall, upon request by a farm operator or producer, immediately grant a temporary permit authorizing the GMO crops to be planted or cultivated, even if a court has called a halt until an Environmental Impact Statement is completed. They’re calling it the Farmer Assurance Provision (Section 733). But far from safeguarding farmers, the only parties whose interests are “assured” by this rider are those of GE crop developers, in particular Monsanto, the company we believe is almost certainly behind it.
Congressman Peter DeFazio, D-OR, is preparing his own amendment to strike the pro-GMO language from the bill. We need to get an avalanche of messages to Capitol Hill supporting the DeFazio amendment and explaining just how lawless the pro-GMO rider is.
The Ag Appropriations bill with this anti-GMO amendment attached will likely be heard on the floor of the House of Representatives by the middle of next week. This means there is still time for us to stop this lawless amendment.
If this language is allowed to stand, it would completely undermine the judicial review process, and would encourage the unchecked deregulation of GE crops despite terrible environmental and health effects.

  1. STOP CHANGING OUR FOODS BY genetically changing them. They taste terrible. They make people sick. They aren’t worth buying and I won’t buy them or grow them. You are killing us with all the altered foods.

  2. These amendments are infuriating. Why are GMO products allowed to proliferate when public opinion wants those products controlled and labeled. Entire populations are getting ill because of these “food” sources?
    Now, their producers are also to be above and beyond all law?
    What is going on? How much are consumers supposed to take?
    Remove these riders immediately. I don’t want to eat GMO food, and I don’t want farmers intimidated and leaving farming because the GMO companies are above the law.

  41. Please vote to stop the GMO’ing of our food. First, it isn’t healthy, Second, the seeds cannot reproduce. Our food tasted better, kept better, and as I said before was healthier before the USA permitted companies that were kicked out of Europe to come here and wreck havoc on us.

  74. I am painfully sick of our Government invading Americans Rights to alter our food with chemicals and growth hormones for Government and business profits. This also means Hydraulic Fracturing all over the Country while poisoning our drinking water and the tributaries that lead to our pure rivers and lakes where we get our drinking water. There is definitive something wrong with the Governments oversight and E.P.A. and F.D.A. when people turn on their kitchen drinking tap water to find it explodes into flames when a fire comes next to it.   92. Please do not pass any agricultural legislation that in any manner contains any Pro-GMO food crop language. Much more study needs to be done about the safety or lack thereof of GMO food crops. Please do not pass any legislation that would allow unwarranted protection to GMO crops before such safety determination studies are thoroughly and independently made. To rush unreviewed crops to the public’s dinner table (largely without their knowledge), to squelch transparency and examination of such foods, even by those in the agricultural review profession, seem to be the intended goals of these new riders.

  140. I find it somewhat discourteous for this article to suggest that USDA is pro-GMO. I suspect they are pro-agriculture, and pro-food production, and pro-choice. They would favor gmo products that support food production, that are safe, that enable agriculture to produce food more efficiently, in increased quantities, with reduction of herbicides, under more drought-tolerant situations, and with increased health attributes, and increased disease resistance. A gmo product that does not do one or more of these things will undoubtedly not be supported. In that case they would be against gmo (for that product). However the proof for attributes of a gmo product cannot be hearsay, or based on poor research, or based on philosophical differences. It must be shown by well-done research data that applies across a broad range of circumstances.

At the same time, the AMA stated their belief that as of June 2012, there is no scientific justification for special labeling of bioengineered foods as a class.
    The report included a review of the potential adverse health effects of bioengineered foods, and agrees with the 1987 National Academy of Sciences white paper, which states that “there is no evidence that unique hazards exist either in the use of rDNA techniques or in the movement of genes between unrelated organisms.”
    The review of peer-reviewed literature revealed no reported and/or substantiated overt consequences to human health. Although acknowledging that there is strong consumer interest in the mandatory labeling of bioengineered foods, the report concludes that the US Food and Drug Administration’s science-based labeling policies do not support special labeling.

    It’s easy to keep seeds from reproducing by themselves. If this happens, no small or medium farmers will afford to buy seeds for crops.

Hello, I just became aware of a dangerous set of policy riders which the biotech industry was able to get inserted into (and buried within) the House Agriculture Committee’s discussion draft of the voluminous 2012 Farm Bill. These riders represent significant changes to the Plant Protection Act (PPA), which will create serious risks to farmers, the environment, and public health by forcing the rushed commercialization of genetically engineered crops. They would also eliminate all meaningful review of the effect GMO crops may have on our environment or our health.
    The new riders, would outlaw any review of GE crop impacts based on the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the Endangered Species Act (ESA), or any other environmental law. And no agency other than USDA would be allowed to provide analysis.
    These riders also establish unworkable deadlines and backdoor approvals—if the crops aren’t reviewed and approved within an absurdly short time, they would default to immediate approval and commercialization. This, together with the diminished environmental analysis, simply makes a mockery of USDA’s GMO crop reviews. It is one of the most blatant examples of crony capitalism at work that I have seen.
    I want these riders removed from the Farm Bill.
