According to Deborah Swackhamer, an environmental health professor at the University of Minnesota, “Hormones at very small doses regulate just about everything, and if you’ve got chemicals that can mimic that, they can mess with growth, behavior, and development.” Just last month, Minnesota banned the chemical bisphenol A (BPA) from baby bottles and sippy cups. California, Connecticut, and the city of Chicago have taken similar action.
The Irish Independent newspaper has chronicled the unfolding science and the regulatory battles over whether BPA in plastic “can actually harm humans.” Irish mothers apparently want to err on the side of caution by altogether avoiding polycarbonate plastic bottles that contain BPA.
AAHF has petitioned the FDA regarding BPA in dental sealants and composite dental fillings. We cannot afford to ignore what hormone mimicking chemicals such as BPA can do to the health of our children, wildlife, and to us.
